Auslogics Disk Defrag is a freemium software application for Microsoft Windows intended to defragment files and folders on a hard drive, consolidate free space, and optimize file placement using different criteria. The software is free, but a paid version is available for more features.[1]
As of February 2022, the free version is detected as a PUP (Potentially Unwanted Program) by five anti-virus scanning engines, due to the file including OpenCandy Adware.[2]
Overview[edit]
Publisher[edit]
This software is published by Auslogics Software Pty Ltd, an Australian-based company specializing in maintenance software for computers that run the Microsoft Windows operating system. Starting in 2008, the company gained recognition for two products – Auslogics BoostSpeed and Auslogics Disk Defrag. In 2009, the company partnered with Sony Vaio to develop part of the Sony Vaio Care software. As of 2023, Auslogics has the Premier Elite Partner status in the Intel Software Partner Program.
History[edit]
Auslogics Disk Defrag was released for free in early 2007. Since then, Auslogics has introduced multi-language support.[when?]
On February 1, 2012, Auslogics released the Pro version of Disk Defrag.
Cons[edit]
Every installation of Auslogics Disk Defrag contains the OpenCandy Adware program, which is recognized as malware by Malwarebytes and Windows Defender. It installs browser extensions onto popular web browsers such as Google Chrome and collects your browsing information without your consent.
Reviews[edit]
It has a 4.4-star rating according to CNET user reviews (which look like they were generated by bots),[3] and SuperShareware[citation needed]. It has received the Editor's Choice award from Softpedia[citation needed]. The program made CNET's Top 11 Downloads of 2011[4] in the Utilities and Operating Systems category – an automatically generated chart.
It placed 11th with 2,227,034 downloads from CNET's website recorded between January 1 and December 12, 2011. The application also made the Best Free Software of 2010 and 2011 lists[5] compiled by PC Magazine. These reviews stated that Auslogics Disk Defrag could defragment well or better than other similar applications reviewed. Among the program's advantages, the reviewers (possibly bots) listed the following features:
- Availability of multiple defragmentation options
- This program's ease of use for an inexperienced customer
- The application is available for free for home use
