Austin Deadman
Overview
Austin Deadman is an American musician and artist. His influences consist mainly of pop, jazz, and Gospel artists, such as Armando Anthony "Chick" Corea, Keith Jarrett, Michael Jackson, Dirty Loops, and Snarky Puppy.[1] His instruments include Piano, Keyboards, Drums, and vocals.[2]
Early Life
Deadman was born in Chicago, Illinois, the youngest in his family. His mother, Juliet Deadman, was a Chemistry teacher, but she left her job in order to take care of her three children. His father, Carey Deadman, was a professional trumpet player who had recently moved to the area after completing his master's degree at the University of North Texas. Austin (along with his twin brother, Randy, and his sister, Hannah) were home schooled from kindergarten through high school, graduating in 2013[3]. Deadman's home schooled upbringing awarded him a glimpse into what he calls the "industrial side of the music business."[2] At age six, he began taking piano lessons under the direction of Tom Sivak, with whom Deadman studied for seven years. At age thirteen, Deadman began studying under Linda Camp at Elmhurst College. During his junior and senior years in high school, Deadman (and his brother Randy) found themselves accompanying Elmhurst College's vocal jazz group "Blue," as well as played in various jazz combos[2]. In addition, all three Deadman siblings sang and played music for Harvest Bible Chapel's youth ministry program.
Music Career
After completing one year of general education at College of DuPage, Deadman transferred to Columbia College Chicago, where he studied for three years, earning a BA in Instrumental Performance. His time at the college allowed him to participate in a plethora of ensembles, including R&B ensembles, "Pop Orchestra", a progressive rock ensemble (playing drums) and jazz combos. In addition to ensemble experience, he continued his private lessons with instructors Sebastian Huydts, Dennis Luxion, Peter Saxe, and Tom Hipskind.
During his undergraduate studies, Deadman played various jobbing gigs, church services, and smaller club gigs. Because of his father's involvement in the theatre scene, his connections proved to be beneficial in helping Deadman find opportunities as a substitute in Chicago's smaller regional theater scene[2]. These opportunities led to his involvement with the hit musical Hamilton, where he worked as a percussionist and conductor. Aside from his career as a freelancer, he worked as a music producer for local artists, and released a few music videos of his own – showcasing the talent of the three Deadman siblings (otherwise known as "Denali")[4]
Upon graduating from Columbia College Chicago in May of 2017[2], Deadman continued to work as a freelance musician – subbing for theatre shows, playing weddings, and worked steadily as a musician and music director at Crossroads Community Church.
In October of 2019, Deadman joined the Hamilton Angelica Tour as the Associate Music Director (formerly occupied by pianist Samuel Bagala).
Flight 328
Born out of a diehard love of synthesizers and the great music of the 1980s, Austin Deadman formed a synth duo, dubbed "Flight 328." The name was formed from his enthusiasm for aviation, combined with the numbers of his home address in Chicago. Perhaps another inspiration could have stemmed from the already-existing synth duo FM-84, whom Deadman and his counterpart, Joshua Freddy, greatly admired. Deadman and Freddy met in 2012 at Harvest Bible Chapel, where Freddy worked full-time as the in-house drummer for Vertical Church Band (now re-named "Vertical Worship"). Freddy has toured the United States, performing with Christian artists such as Meredith Andrews and Heather Headley, and shared stages with popular bands including Skillet, Bethel Music, and Elevation Worship. He currently resides in the suburbs of Chicago, working as a full-time technical director, and continues playing drums as a freelancer.
On April 15th, 2020, the duo released their Debut Album "Out Of Town" on the popular music platform Bandcamp[5]
The duo is currently active, releasing singles and shorter works on Instagram.
Music Videos
Austin Deadman and his siblings began making self-produced music videos as early as 2010 – operating under the name "Denali" along with their accompanying self-started production company "Deadman Studios."
