The Austin Youth Orchestra (AYO) is a youth orchestra for grades 1-12 serving Greater Austin, Texas.[1] It is comprised of seven separate orchestras of varying age brackets and ability.[2]
History[edit]
The AYO was founded during the 1973-74 school year by John Pearson as the All-City Orchestra, alongside an All-City Jazz Band and All-City Choir. William Dick was the inaugural conductor.[1]
In the 1993-94 school year, the Austin Independent School District changed the name of the All-City program to Austin Youth Symphony.[1]
Prominent AYO bassist Draylen Mason was killed in the 2018 Austin serial bombings.[3] The AYO has created a scholarship in his name. [4]
The AYO maintains close ties to the Austin Symphony Orchestra, regularly hosting Music Director Peter Bay as guest conductor.[5][6]
