The Australasian Bat Society (ABS) is a not-for-profit organization based in the region of Australasia. The group aims to "promote the conservation of bats and their habitats through the advancement of quality science and the extensive experience of [their] members.".[1]

History[edit]

The Australasian Bat Society originated as an informal network of ecologists and researchers in the mid-60s, and was later formalised in 1992.[2] In following years, the society has grown to over 500 members, expanding to include consultants, wildlife carers and natural resource managers, and members of the general public.[3]

Research and Impact[edit]

The ABS has been successful in its science-based advocacy for bat species, and has worked directly with the Australian government on multiple occasions, assisting with information and guiding policy documents.[4] Biannually, the society holds ABS conference with a large number of speakers from accross the region.[5] These conferences typically last for three days and include social events and field sessions.[6] Addionally, the ABS are responsible for the Australasian Bat Conservation Fund to assist members in promoting bat conservation and research across Australasia.
