Australian Council of Learned Academies

The Australian Council of Learned Academies, known as ACOLA, is an independent not-for-profit organisation that convenes Australia's five Learned Academies to develop responses to complex global and national issues based on the combined expertise of Fellows from across the academic disciplines.

History

ACOLA began as the Consultative Committee of the Australian Academies (at the time, only two) in September 1970, moving to become an unincorporated association in 1995 as the National Academies Forum, then under its current name from 2010. In May 2018 ACOLA was established as an Australian Research Institute by the Australian Government's Department of Education.

Membership

ACOLA convenes Australia's five Learned Academies, these being:

• The Australian Academy of Science
• The Australian Academy of Technological Sciences and Engineering
• The Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia
• The Australian Academy of the Humanities
• The Australian Academy of Health and Medical Sciences

Fellows of each Academy are termed as "Associate Members" of ACOLA.
