AIMS is a professional body representing Medical and Clinical Scientists working throughout Australia in all disciplines of Medical Laboratory Science and Laboratory Medicine. The Australian Institute of Medical and Clinical Scientists (AIMS) was founded in 1914.

AIMS carries out a range of functions including:

  • representing the interests of Medical Science to Government, Media and Universities
  • organising a Continuing Professional Development scheme (CPD), APACE (Australasian Professional Acknowledgement of Continuing Education)
  • offering a Fellowship scheme
  • publishing scientific and professional publications
  • being the assessing authority for qualification assessments and people seeking to migrate to Australia for the occupations of Medical Laboratory Scientist, Medical Laboratory Scientist with IVF Embryologist Specialisation, Medical Laboratory Technician and Pathology Collector/Phlebotomist and employer requested skills assessment
  • facilitates the AIMS Professional and Membership Examinations
  • accredits University degrees (for a list of accredited degree courses, visit the AIMS website)
  • promotes public awareness of Laboratory Medicine by working with all Health, Science and Innovation Stakeholders and representatives of Government
  • updating members through scientific meetings, professional events and educational web content
  • supporting self-regulation and developing options for a national medical science self-regulation program
  • supporting an updated workforce picture of Medical Laboratory Science in Australia to better plan for continued provision of a quality services especially in rural and remote areas.
  • supporting greater Government and industry support for research, innovation, training and development in Medical Science in Australia.
  • offering Scholarships for attendance at scientific meetings and workshops
  • offering a Research Engagement Grant Scheme
  • providing a Travelling Orator program
  • has representation on National and International bodies including the:
  • sharing key member concerns and innovation opportunities with all levels of Government to ensure Medical Science and AIMS members are recognised and continue to provide quality services.
  • seeking greater Government and industry support for the recognition for Medical Scientists and Medical Technicians

Qualification Assessment & Eligibility to work in Australia[edit]

AIMS is the recognised body appointed by the Australian Department of Home Affairs to assess the skills and qualifications for people seeking migrate to Australia for the following occupations:

  • Medical Laboratory Scientist ANZSCO 234611,
  • Medical Laboratory Scientist ANZSCO 234611 Specialisation: IVF Embryologist,
  • Medical Laboratory Technician ANZSCO 311213 and
  • Pathology Collector ANZSCO 311216​


AIMS Publications[edit]

AIMS publishes a peer reviewed scientific journal called 'The Australian Journal of Medical Science' (AJMS). The AJMS started publication in July 1936 and is published quarterly in the months February, May, August and November. The AJMS is listed on the Register of Referred Journal by the Australian Commonwealth Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations and is abstracted through the Australasian Medical Index, Chemical Abstracts and EMBASE/Excerpta Medica.

University Accreditation[edit]

The primary qualification for Medical Scientists in Australia is an AIMS accredited three or four year degree in medical science, medical laboratory science or laboratory medicine. AIMS assesses and accredits a range of directed Bachelor and Master degree programs.

AIMS Continuing education (APACE)[edit]

The APACE (Australasian Professional Acknowledgement of Continuing Education) scheme is a voluntary program facilitated by AIMS. APACE has been designed to recognise continuing education, formal courses and professional activities.
