Austrian Association for Legal Linguistics

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

The Austrian Association for Legal Linguistics (AALL) is a non-profit scientific research association in the field of applied linguistics which promotes research on the relationship between law and language in various multidisciplinary contexts.[1][2] According to the organisation's website, the research conducted by its members is focused on "statutory interpretation, linguistic evidence in the juridical process, speaker recognition and identification".[3] The AALL was founded on 4 May 2017[4] by Daniel Leisser and Luke Green, two students of English linguistics at the University of Vienna,[5][6][7] and is involved in the organisation of both academic and non-academic events, such as conferences and panel discussions.[8] [9] The AALL is also involved in the development of legal competence courses in adult education.[10] This has led to the introduction of the school subject "Recht und Gerechtigkeit" (Law and Justice) at Bundesgymnasium, Bundesrealgymnasium und Wirtschaftskundliches Bundesrealgymnasium für Berufstätige,[11] a secondary school in Vienna, Austria.

Controversy[edit]

In December 2017, the AALL received national media interest due to a live radio interview with its current president,[12][13] who criticised Austrian legislation for its allegedly extensive use of vague adjectives.[14] In the course of the debate it was contended repeatedly that a considerable number of Austrian citizens do not "understand what is written in the law" [15] The views communicated by AALL members appear to show parallels to the plain language movement in the United States and are often contextualised with a decision of the Constitutional Court from 1994 where it is stated that the law must be clear and understable to all legal subjects since they are otherwise not able to act in a lawful manner.
