Autocratization

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Autocratization refers to any political system moving towards autocracy.

Types of Autocratization

Democratic Backsliding

Democratic backsliding is the process of a democratic political system gradually becoming less democratic. It is a slower and incremental form of autocratization, proceeding through the erosion of institutional checks, civil liberties, electoral integrity, ultimately shifting a polity toward competitive authoritarianism or full autocracy.

Autocratic Deepening

Autocratic deepening exists as an intensification within already autocratic systems. It is the consolidation and/or intensification of an authoritarian regime's power. instead of assuming a starting point of democracy, autocratic deepening assumes an environment of autocracy which strengthens coercive capacity, further tightening existing media controls, weakening governmental restraints or checks on executive power, and further reduction of spaces for pluralism or competitive political sentiments.

Full Democratic Breakdown

Democratic Breakdown refers to an abrupt and sudden end of a given democratic political system. Though also a transition from democracy to autocracy, democratic breakdown is more sudden than democratic backsliding.
