Autonomous Cars and their potential benefits:

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

In this paragraph number of benefits associated with AVs will be further discussed in details. Among numerous benefits of AVs safety and convenience are the most significant ones. AVS have many potential benefits, the most important are: safety and convenience. Car crashes are unfortunately very common nowadays and most of these road accidents are caused by human error. According to U.S Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), about 32,675 people died in car crashes in 2014 and most of these accidents were caused by drunk driving, distracted driving, failing to yield the right of way and failure to remain in one lane (Ramachandra, 2017). AVs can reduce the rate of car related accidents, since AVs will be equipped with dedicated sensory system that will also allow AVs to communicate with one another and exchange data which in return will optimize traffic flow in real time. The connected AVs could warn each other of hazardous road conditions, prioritizing the passage of emergency cars. One study evaluated the safety of AVs mostly Google cars. In this study, Sivak and Schoettle (2015) studied the crashes of three major AVs developers (Audi, Google and Audi) tested on the streets and roads of California.

The study found that in about 1.2 million miles traveled mostly by Google car, there were total of 11 accidents. All these accidents occurred when the AV was either stopped (three crashes) or moving at the speed of less than five miles per hour (there were eight crashes recorded). Among all these crashes only two of them were injury crashes. After comparing the sample data to a sample acquired from the U.S, police reported crashes Sivak and Schoettle found that AVs related crashes and injuries averaged remarkably lower as compared to conventional cars (i.e., 0.77 versus and 3.99 1.9 verses 9.1 injuries and crashes per million miles driven, respectively) (Shinar, 2017,156). Likewise, with enhanced safety measures AVs could possibly decrease the rate of car crash deaths and save the U.S over 400 billion in total costs of accidents (Ramachandra, 2017). AVs besides enhancing safety could also provide convenience to people. AVs could be fun allowing passengers to multitask and taka rest. AVs could be used as mobile bedrooms, offices. People with physical disabilities could significantly benefit from this future transportation. They can no longer be burden on their families; they could have access to employment and education. Though it is not trustworthy to let one’s kid to be transported by AVs; however, it may be acceptable for parents to use these vehicles as the primary means of transportation for children in the near future. AVs will also have an unavoidable impact on long standing car insurance[1] system in the United States. Auto insurances rates could decrease. Also AVs could get smaller and they will require less power. This will cause fuel reduction. People could save money on car insurance and fuel economy.
