The Autonomous University of Chiapas (in Spanish: Universidad Autónoma de Chiapas, UNACH) is a public university institution for higher education. It is located in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, capital of Chiapas, Mexico. The university also has other academic centers in Arriaga, Comitán, Pichucalco, San Cristóbal de las Casas, Pijijiapan, Palenque, Copainalá, Tapachula and Villaflores.
It was founded in 1974, but it did not start its activities until 1975 under the direction of Manuel Velasco Suárez, the Governor at that time. After its foundation, various schools of higher education that previously existed joined, among them the School of Engineering, the School of Medicine and the School of Law; the first two in Tuxtla Gutiérrez and the last in San Cristóbal de las Casas. Various degrees were also incorporated.
Shield
In July 1975, Carlos Serrato Alvarado, the director of the School of Civil Engineering designed the university shield.[1] Before, a contest had been organized for this purpose, having been declared void. Serrato Alvarado tried to represent Mexico and Chiapas in the shield, but with an emphasis on Chiapas. The objective of the representation was to recognize Chiapas as the state whose people voluntarily decided to adopt Mexicanity. This is symbolized on the shield with two eagles.
On the other hand, the entity was geographically represented in relation to the Isthmus, that is the characteristic structure of the University, with the objective of facilitating access to culture to the entire state of Chiapas. The letter "N" was added to the initials of the Autonomous University of Chiapas to differentiate them from other Universities. Moreover, the phrase "Science, Art and Technology" was added instead of the motto, which was not available at that moment.
The shield was presented and approved at the ordinary meeting number 8 of the University Council, held in Tapachula in 1976.
Two original copies were made. One is preserved in the School of Engineering and the other was delivered to the Rectory in the celebration of the XXIV Anniversary of the School. The shield is framed by the legend that says the Autonomous University of Chiapas; inside two eagles in profile located to the right and left of the capital "U" that means "UNIVERSITY" inside it; and in the upper part the initials UNACH.
The shield also includes the State of Chiapas, the Pacific Ocean, the Gulf of Mexico and the lines that delimit the geographical borders of Chiapas, Oaxaca, Veracruz, Tabasco and Guatemala. All these representations are within a geometric figure.
College Mascot
The Autonomous University of Chiapas adopted the image of the ocelot as a representative of its spirit and identity. Its strength, intelligence, cunning, bravery, stealth, and speed make it one of the most successful species. The ancient Mexicans had the "ocelotl" as an emblem of bravery and courage and was represented as the warrior "ocelotl".
History
The UNACH was founded in 1974 by the initiative of the Governor of Chiapas, Manuel Velasco Suárez, but formal activities began on 17 April 1975, when it was approved by organic law.[2][3]
The UNACH adopted a structure of university campuses distributed in the most important cities of Chiapas, according to the decentralization of the state. In its origin, the faculties were created as higher schools. This was later modified by the traditional European system of schools and colleges. The university announced 23 careers of which some changed their names, others were duplicated or passed to other institutions of higher education and others disappeared.
At that time, the Autonomous University of Chiapas offered 24 degrees. By 1975, the date on which the University's teaching activities began, modifications were made to the initial project, due to the fact that some of the careers changed their names, others were replaced and still others were duplicated based on those existing in other regions of the state; there were others that did not enter into operation. Finally, the programs grouped by campus come into operation, distributed in three cities of three economic regions of the entity, Centro, Altos and Soconusco. Later, Campus V was incorporated with the careers of Parasitologist Agronomist Engineer, Phytotechnologist Agronomist Engineer and Zootechnical Agronomist Engineer, in Villaflores. In addition campus VI emerged with the careers of Pedagogy and Latin American Letters, in Tuxtla Gutiérrez.
Since its origin, the UNACH covered three regions: I Center, II Altos and VIII Soconusco, later it was extended to regions III Fronteriza, IV Frailesca, V Norte and IX Istmo-Costa. At present, the University is made up of 16 schools and faculties, distributed in nine university campuses. With this, seven of the nine economic regions of the State are covered. The recently created campuses are VII in Pichucalco, VIII in Comitan and IX in Tonala and Arriaga.
On the other hand, the language departments distributed in the cities of Tuxtla Gutierrez, San Cristobal de las Casas and Tapachula were also integrated, and these departments offered the foreign languages English, French, Italian and German, as well as the dialects of Tzotzil and Tzeltal (in the case of San Cristobal de las Casas).

Carlos Maciel Espinoza
Carlos Maciel Espinoza was the most important benefactor in the history of the university. By 1969, the number of students had increased considerably, so it was necessary to make use of the 250,000 m² that Maciel Espinoza had donated. This land was located at kilometer 1,081 of the Pan-American Highway. Later, the benefactor donated $ 100,000 for the construction of the School of Accounting and Administration Technicians, starting the building that same year. The School of Engineering and the Higher School of Commerce and Architecture were built in 1969 on the land of San Andrés Piedra Bola donated by Maciel Espinoza. Subsequently, under the administration of Manuel Velasco Suárez, the University Auditorium, the Rectory facilities and other constructions were built.
Later, following the example of Maciel Espinoza, new donations were made to benefit the university. These include donations from the men who made up the Chiapas Athenaeum of Sciences and Arts, the City Council of Cintalapa de Figuera, Sponsorship Gonzalez Garrido, the federal magisterium, the Union of Cocoa Producers, Edgar Robledo Santiago, the United Students group of ICACH, the Circle of Social Studies of the Law School, the Pichucalco Lions Club, the municipal presidencies of Tuxtla Gutierrez, Mapstepec, Chamula, La Trinitaria, Acala, Sixto González and the people in general through a radio marathon (Reyes Magos, F.,1995:19). On 26 July 1997, Maciel Espinoza donated a building for the university in the city’s center, as well as the land deeds where the first campus of the UNACH was built (11 March 1966).
After his death, the main university library was renamed in his honor.[4] The university has subsequently introduced an award for social service bearing his name,[4][5] as well as a 5K race for students first ran in 2021.[6]
Faculties
The UNACH is made up of a group of 13 faculties that are in charge of teaching undergraduate and graduate programs. Each of these faculties has its own academic bodies. It also has a language school and a degree in computer systems, taught at the accounting and administration faculty.
Campus
The main building is located to the west of the city of Tuxtla Gutiérrez, where the Faculty of Accounting and Administration, the Faculty of Languages, the Faculty of Engineering, the Faculty of Architecture and the Faculty of Humanities are located. Also located to the south of the city is the Faculty of Human Medicine, one of the most prestigious in the country, and the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Zootechnics located on the outskirts of the city. There are other faculties on the campuses of the other cities.
In San Cristobal de las Casas, there is the Faculty of Law, founded in 1678, being originally a Jesuit college. Through the years it has undergone different changes, but always concentrating on legal studies. In 1975, it joined the Autonomous University of Chiapas, being one of its backbones. It is currently one of the best at the national level and the only one accredited by CONFEDE in the Southeast, summing up to be the best institution for teaching Law in the Southeast of Mexico.

The creation of the Degree in Physics and Mathematics was approved on December 9, 2005 in a session of the University Council and its current study plan was approved in a session of June 29, 2006, assigning them to the Faculty of Engineering Campus I. On October 30, 2007, the General Directorate of Professions of the Undersecretary of Higher Education authorized the Autonomous University of Chiapas to add the degree in Mathematics with DGP code 111301. On October 30, 2008, the Ordinary Session of the University Council approves the creation of the Center for Studies in Physics and Basic and Applied Mathematics of the Autonomous University of Chiapas (CEFyMAP). In 2014, the change from Study Center to Faculty was obtained, approved by the unanimous vote of the University Council of the Highest State House of Studies.
