Ava (EMR) is a Canadian electronic medical record platform based in Calgary, Alberta. The software is used in community and primary care settings and includes modules for patient communication, scheduling, documentation, and billing.[1][2]
History
Ava was founded in 2016 by Calgary family physicians Dr. Mike Forseth and Dr. Matt Henschke. The two developed the system after identifying workflow limitations in existing electronic medical record products used in Canada.[1] Early iterations were designed to reduce screen switching and streamline data entry for community-based clinicians.[3]
By 2020, Ava had expanded beyond the founders’ clinic, with adoption by additional practices across Alberta.[2]
Between 2021 and 2024, usage grew in both Alberta and British Columbia, with over 230 clinics implementing the system by late 2024.[3]
As of 2025, Ava was used by more than 7,500 healthcare professionals across about 300 clinics, managing over six million patient charts and serving millions of patients each year.[4]
Products and features
Ava integrates scheduling, charting, billing, and communication functions within a unified interface.[3]
Key components include:
- Ava Connect, a web-based portal that allows patients to view medical records, manage appointments, and communicate securely with their care teams.[3]
- Ava Scribe, an integrated AI-supported note-taking tool designed to generate documentation directly within the chart.[3]
- Enhanced Document Classifier[4]
- AI Patient Care Plans[4]
Implementation support and user training are delivered through Ava Academy, the company’s online education and support platform.[3]
Recognition
In April 2025, Canada Health Infoway selected Ava as a recipient of its Vendor Innovation Program, which supports interoperability initiatives among electronic medical record vendors in Canada.[5]
In October 2025, Ava was named a Company to Watch in Deloitte’s Technology Fast 50 program for its growth and adoption across Canadian clinics.[4]
