Avaline is an American wine brand established in 2020.
History
Avaline is the product of Golden Globe-nominated actress and wellness author Cameron Diaz and entrepreneur Katherine Power. Diaz and Power were first introduced to each other by Diaz's sister-in-law, fashion designer and socialite Nicole Richie.
The earliest origins of the brand date back to 2018, the product of a conversation between the two women about their concerns with the lack of transparency in the wine industry. Diaz specifically cites the undisclosed presence of artificial coloring and non-vegan filtration additives as factors that led her to develop an interest in wine produced with total transparency in mind. After finding clean wine to be a more suitable alternative to mainstream wine, Diaz and Power made the decision to create a brand that produces wine that is "clean, vegan-friendly, made with organic grapes, and free of unnecessary add-ins like sugars, colors, and concentrates".[1][2]
In April 2018, the pair paid visits to wineries across Western Europe to scout out grape suppliers for their potential brand, ultimately settling on two historic wine regions. After two years of deliberation, the brand was officially announced on July 9th, 2020 through Diaz's Instagram page.[3][user-generated source?]
Vineyards
Diaz and Power sought to begin the company with a rosé and white, leading the pair to visit both France and Spain to scout out potential grape suppliers, citing a lack of artificial additives, organic certification, low-to-no irrigation, and lack of pesticides as key components for their suppliers to adhere to.
They ultimately settled upon two regions to source their ingredients from - the organic grapes for the rosé are from Provence, France, while the varietals of the white wine stem from the Penedes region of Catalonia, a part of Spain that's best known for producing cava.[4] Each nation's crop is certified organic by two separate bodies: the Bureau Veritas based in Paris, France, and the Catalan Council of the Organic Production based in Barcelona.[5]
Wines
There are currently two Avaline products available on the market, a Provence rosé and a Spanish white blend. The rosé is composed of Cinsault, Grenache, Cabernet Sauvignon, Syrah, and Caladoc grapes, and has an ABV of 13%. The white blend is made up of Xarel·lo, Macabeo, and Malvasia grapes, and has an ABV of 11.5%.[6]
Both wines are made from organic grapes and certified vegan, non-GMO, and gluten-free. In lieu of using traditional fining agents in the wine industry such as isinglass, sourced from fish bladder, casein, a protein found in dairy milk, or egg whites, the company uses bentonite clay and pea protein to ensure no animal products are incorporated into the final product.[5]
Transparency
Through the release of this brand, the pair plan to usher in a "new standard of transparency"[7] to the wine industry, with each individual ingredient disclosed on the label alongside nutritional information. Diaz has cited the lack of regulations obligating the disclosure of ingredients as a particularly troubling aspect of the wine industry, stating that consumers deserve to know exactly what's included within the product.[8]
