Óscar R. Benavides Avenue (Spanish: Avenida Óscar R. Benavides), also known by its former name, Diagonal Avenue (Spanish: Avenida Diagonal),[1] is one of the main avenues of the Miraflores District of Lima.
It is constituted as an important commercial axis of this district and extends from north to south along five blocks, starting in the Miraflores Roundabout and ending in Berlín Street, where it runs for one more block and is then split between the Bajada Balta (which goes into the Costa Verde highway) and the Malecón 28 de Julio.[2]
History
The avenue appeared in 1920 as a consequence of the urban expansion that Lima went through starting in the early 20th century. It was then remodeled in 1940.[1]
The avenue is named after Óscar R. Benavides, who was president of Peru on two occasions: 1914–1915 and 1933–1939.[citation needed]
