Avocados From Mexico (AFM) is a not-for-profit marketing company created by the Mexican Hass Avocado Importers Association (MHAIA) and the Avocado Producers and Exporting Packers Association of Mexico (APEAM A.C.) designed to carry out a coordinated program of advertising, promotion, development, information, and research for Hass avocados imported from Mexico.

Avocado production in Mexico[edit]

Avocados have been produced in Mexico for at least 10,000 years. The oldest remnant of a Mexican avocado tree was found in the Coaxcatlan, Puebla, region of Mexico.[1][2]

Mexico remains the leading producer of avocados in the world, with more than 150,000 acres of land dedicated to growing the fruit.[3] Most avocado producers here operate on small orchards ranging from 5 to 10 hectares.[4] Mexican growers create a tree by manually hand-grafting the branches of the Patron avocado plant and the roots of the criollo avocado plant. In three to five years, a small tree will produce up to 750 pounds of fruit per year.[5]

To become a certified Avocado From Mexico grower, each piece of fruit must meet strict quality control guidelines, including but not limited to:[6]

  • The fruit must come from a field that meets USDA standards
  • The fruit must never touch the ground at any point
  • The fruit must be transported at a temperature between 5 to 8 degrees Celsius
  • The fruit must travel on a road where specific topographic and road condition standards are met
  • The fruit must pass initial inspection upon arrival at the packing house
  • Once brushed and cleaned, the fruit must again pass an inspection by an engineer and an electronic eye, a machine that uses three cameras to analyze each fruit based on size and skin imperfections
  • The fruit must spend no more than 48 hours in a refrigerated shipping container before reaching supermarket shelves

After an 83-year ban, the first Mexican Hass avocado arrived in the continental U.S. in 1997.[7] As of 2015, approximately 12,650 growers produce official Avocados From Mexico each year across more than 243,467 acres.[8]

Organization history[edit]

Avocados From Mexico was formed in 2013 as the not for profit association for the Mexican Hass Avocados Importers Association and the Association of Growers and Packers of Avocados From Mexico.[9]

AFM is based out of Irving, Texas, and is tasked with growing the overall avocado market along with the AFM brand.[9]

Programs[edit]

AFM has worked to both increase the sales of Mexican avocados and avocados generally. The total volume of avocados sold in the U.S. has increased to 1.7 billion pounds[9], with annual sales topping out around $2 billion.[10]

Super Bowl ad[edit]

In 2015, taking into consideration that guacamole is a staple at Super Bowl parties, AFM decided to advertise during the game and aired the “First Draft Ever” ad during Super Bowl XLIX. The Super Bowl commercial gained media attention, yielding more than 1 billion media impressions.[11]

Partnerships[edit]

About APEAM A.C.[edit]

The Association of Growers and Packers of Avocados From Mexico was founded in 1997. The company consists of more than 12,000 certified producers and 40 certified packaging companies exporting to the United States. APEAM A.C. has representatives in New York, Chicago, and southern Texas.[12]

About MHAIA[edit]

The purpose of The Mexican Hass Avocados Importers Association is to carry out a coordinated program of advertising, promotion, information, and research for AFM and to fulfill the provisions of the Hass Avocado Promotion Research and Information Act of 2000 and the Hass Avocado Promotion, Research, and Information Order.[13]

Other Partnerships[edit]

Since 2013, Avocados From Mexico has partnered with celebrities, brands, and corporations to ramp up avocado consumption in the U.S. Partners have included:

Endorsements[edit]

Avocados From Mexico occasionally endorses other companies, brands, and personalities that promote a healthy lifestyle. Endorsements include:

  • FNV, founding supporter[19]
  • Partnership for a Healthier America (PHA)[20]
  • ChooseMyPlate.gov[21]

Growing season[edit]

The Mexican Hass avocados promoted by Avocados From Mexico are always in season because they are grown in Michoacán, Mexico.[22] Michoacán is the only place on Earth where avocados can bloom four times a year, thanks to the ideal soil, sunshine, and rainfall in the region. As a result, the avocados contain a higher oil content, which some say make them creamier and smoother than other varieties.[23]
