Avril Chester (born May 1978) is a British charity founder and author.
Early Life and education[edit]
Chester was educated at Varndean College in Brighton and the University of Plymouth, graduating with a degree in media arts in 2000.
Career[edit]
After successfully completing a two-year graduate management scheme at Oberthur Technologies, Chester went on to work as project manager at Legal & General and American Express. In 2014, she was appointed Assistant Director at the City of London Corporation.
Chester was chief technology officer at the Royal Institute of British Architects (RIBA), for which she was nominated for CTO of the year at the 2022 Women in IT Awards..[1]
In March 2022, she was appointed chief technology officer at The Royal Pharmaceutical Society.[2]
Charity work[edit]
Chester was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2015. In 2016, she was appointed interim IT director at Scope [3].
In 2018, she founded the Cancer Central [4] charity in East Sussex, for which she was awarded Entrepreneur of the Year Award at the 2019 Women in IT Awards [5] and cited as one of 2020/2021’s most influential women in UK tech [6]
Chester’s first book, Be with Me [7], a collection of her poems written at various stages of her cancer treatment, was published in 2016 [8] [9]. Taking That Leap of Faith, discussing Chester’s experience transitioning from executive to entrepreneur, was published in 2019.
