Axel Bauni
Axel Bauni (born 1961) is a German pianist who specialises in 20th century and contemporary Lied. He has recorded albums and has been a professor at the Berlin University of the Arts since 2003 and currently teaches at the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Mannheim, University of Mannheim.[1][2]
Studies[edit]
Bauni was born in Ludwigshafen on the Rhine, where he was taught piano as a child. He later learned the organ in the Bischöfliches Kirchenmusikalisches Institut. He began formal musical studies in the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Mannheim, then moved to Berlin in 1981, where he studied piano and Lieder interpretation at the Berlin University of the Arts with Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau and Aribert Reimann.[citation needed]

Following his studies, Bauni became a piano accompanist to singers including Thomas Quasthoff, Juliane Banse, Dietrich Henschel, Claudia Barainsky, Christine Schäfer and Stella Doufexis. Beyond being an interpreter, Bauni has also been initiator and/or dedicatee of new music by composers including Wolfgang Rihm, Aribert Reimann, Hans Werner Henze, Hans-Jürgen von Bose and Matthias Pintscher.[citation needed]
Bauni organises musical events, founding or leading projects that aim for contemporary appreciation of the genre of the Lied, including the Lied des 20. Jahrhunderts in Cologne (2000), the festival Lied:Strahl in Hanover (2000) and the Liedforum Berlin, that enables students and teachers from Lieder courses at German universities do exchanges and collaborate. Bauni has recorded albums with Lieder by 20th century composers such as Ernst Krenek, Hans Pfitzner and Victor Ullmann.[citation needed]
Bauni has music teacher from 1988. Until 1993 he was assistant teacher at the Hochschule der Künste Berlin, subsequently teaching and giving master classes in Europe and North America. Since 2003 he has been professor and director of a course of contemporary Lieder for singers and pianists at the Berlin University of the Arts. Since 2020 he is a professor of Lied interpretation in the Hochschule für Musik und Darstellende Kunst Mannheim.
Bauni was featured in Pianisten Profile, a book published by Bärenreiter that "portrays the 600 most relevant keyboardists of the 20th and 21st centuries".[3]
