Axel Schmiegelow

As one of the early internet founders of the late 90s and early 2000s in Germany[1], Axel Schmiegelow grew up in Japan, the USA, Sri Lanka, and Belgium, and studied law at the Sorbonne University from 1990 to 1992 and at the University of Cologne from 1992 to 1995[2]. In 2000, he completed an entrepreneurship program at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT)[2]. His specialisation was in business law, software law, and international law[2]. In May 1998, Schmiegelow founded the internet agency denkwerk with partners Joerg Rheinboldt and Felix Hildebrand [3]. As a founder and CEO of an early-stage incubator, Axel Schmiegelow invested in various startups that focus on IT products and digital services[4]. His current portfolio includes Freshly and humatics [4]. Former investments include armedangels, coupies, Qype (sold to Yelp)[5], sevenload and PaperC[6]. Since 2012, his entrepreneurial activity has focused on building itravel as a platform for fully individualized experience travel[7]. He was elected chairman of the Social Media working group at the Federal Association of Digital Economy (BVDW) e. V. and of the IPTV/WebTV working group at the Federal Association of Information Economy, Telecommunications, and New Media (BITKOM) e. V. from 2009 to 2010[8]. He was also a Deputy member of the Broadcasting Council of the WDR from 2009[9]. He was previously Vice President of the Federal Association of Digital Economy e.V from 2003 to 2006.[10]
