Axens is a French company in the energy sector, which operates on the refining, petrochemicals, gas treatment, renewable energy (fuels and petrochemical intermediates such as para-xylene, possibly renewable and alternative energy sources) and water markets[4].
Operating out of 15 countries, it supplies technologies (licensor), equipment, furnaces, modular units, products (catalysts and adsorbents), digital applications, and services (technical assistance, consultancy, training) for these markets[5].
It also develops solutions for the purification of remediation water and the treatment of drinking water.
Axens was created in 2001 by the IFP Energies nouvelles (previously Institut Français du Pétrole) through the merger of the latter's industrial department with Procatalyse[2].
History[edit]
Origins[edit]
In 1955, the Institut Français du Pétrole started its first licensed unit. In 1959, Procatalyse[6], a joint subsidiary of the Institut Français du Pétrole and Pechiney was founded. On 30 June 2001, Procatalyse and the Industrial Division of IFP Energies nouvelles merged to create Axens[2].
Development[edit]
Axens has experienced continuous growth since its inception[7]. Alongside its French production site in Salindres (Gard)[8], the company's growth has been driven in particular by the acquisition of production sites. In 2010, Axens acquired Rio Tinto Alcan's activated alumina production site in Brockville, Canada[9][10]; in 2011, Axens acquired the Criterion reforming catalyst production site in Willow Island, USA[11][12]; in 2016, Axens acquired Scutter Enterprises' O'Fallon production site in the USA[13]. In 2016, Axens inaugurated its Axens Catalysts Arabia Ltd. production site at Dammam in Saudi Arabia[14]. In 2016, Axens files a friendly takeover bid for the shares of the French engineering company Heurtey Petrochem[15]. On 26 July 2018, Axens held 97.5% of the shares of Heurtey Petrochem[16][17], and launched its squeeze-out offer: it has held 100% since then[18]. At the same time, Axens acquired 50% of the capital of Eurecat. The legal merger of the French entities of Axens and Heurtey Petrochem has been effective since 1 January 2019[19].
Operations[edit]
Axens, through its 3 brands (Axens Solutions, Heurtey Petrochem Solutions and Axens Horizon)[19] is developing its operations in five areas:
Refining[edit]
Axens operates throughout the entire chain of applications of the petroleum refining. It offers processes for basic engineering of units and produces catalysts and adsorbents[20].
Example: hydrotreatment[edit]
As a result of the tightening of regulations concerning the content of sulphur of fuels, Axens has developed processes for hydrotreatment[21] such as Prime-G+ for FCC gasoline (catalytic cracking at fluidized bed), Prime-D for diesel and Prime-K for kerosene.
Example: catalytic cracking[edit]
The catalytic cracking at fluid bed is a refining process patented by Eugène Houdry in 1928 and intended to transform petroleum heavy ends into lighter hydrocarbons, used in the composition of fuels. Since its discovery, this process has evolved significantly to improve performance and profitability and to process increasingly heavy crude oil. The FCC Alliance, founded in 1977, brings together four partners (IFPEN, Axens, Total and Technip Stone & Webster Process Technology), and was responsible for 60 process licenses worldwide in 2015 as well as 250 projects to modernize existing units[22].
Petrochemicals[edit]
Axens provides technology to the petrochemicals sector, in particular in the fields of production and purification of olefins, cyclohexane, butene[23][24], benzene[25][26], toluene and para-xylene[27].
Gas[edit]
Axens is active in the following markets: • Processes for natural gas treatment, purification and processing of natural gas[28] (catalysts for desulphurization of natural gas, molecular sieves for drying various impurities, demercurization adsorbents, production of fuels from natural gas: Fischer-Tropsch technology[29][30]) • Refinery gas treatment: Claus process • Industrial gas processing: adsorbents for compressed air drying and in air separation units.
Renewable and alternative energy[edit]
Axens offers processes for the transformation of biomass into biofuels. Futurol technology allows the production of bioethanol from lignocellulosic biomass[31]. The Atol process, developed in partnership with IFP Energies nouvelles and Total, produces dehydration from first- and second-generation bioethanol[30]. The Vegan technology produces biofuels by hydrotreating of vegetable oils and fats[32]. Total is using it for its la Mède biorefinery project[33][34].
Water[edit]
Axens offers adsorbents (aluminas) dedicated to the purification and decontamination of water from industrial sites (elimination of zinc, copper, arsenic, fluoride and phosphates) and drinking water treatment.
Brands[edit]
Axens Group owns three trademarks[35]
• Axens Solutions, for the sale of process licenses, modular units and catalysts and adsorbents
• Heurtey Petrochem Solutions, for furnace sales and modernization[36]
• Axens Horizon, for audit and consulting services, digitalization services, and air preheaters
Organization[edit]
Key people[edit]
Jean Sentenac has been CEO of Axens since 2002[37][38]
In France[edit]
The head office of Axens has been located in France, in Rueil-Malmaison since its inception in 2001. Axens also has a production site at Salindres (Gard)[8] in Occitania and a team on the IFP Energies nouvelles research site at Solaize in the Rhône-Alpes region[39]
