Early life[edit]
Al-Ani was born in Darmstadt on 19 May 1964.[1] He spent his childhood and youth as the son of an Iraqi father and a German mother in Baghdad and Vienna, where his father worked as a diplomat for the Iraqi Mission to OPEC. According to the name, the ancestors of the Iraqi branch of the family come from the historic city of Ana in the Iraqi province of Anbar.
Al-Ani studied economics and political science at Vienna University, where he gained a doctorate in Economics and Social Sciences in 1990 and a doctorate in Political Science in 1996.[2]
Career[edit]
Al-Ani started his career at Ernst & Young in Vienna in 1992, before moving joined Diebold Management Consulting as a senior manager. In 1995, Al-Ani joined the management consultancy firm Accenture, where he remained until 2009, occupying several positions, most recently as Senior Executive Partner in Vienna. In 2014, Al-Ani founded the digital consultancy firm Tebble, where he remains the CEO.[3]
Al-Ani taught management and business administration at Vienna University from 1990 to 2007. Between 2009 and 2013, he served as the rector of the Berlin campus of ESCP Business School.[4] He then joined Hertie School as a professor for business policy and new public management, where he remained until 2014. Between 2015 and 2018, Al-Ani held visiting professorships at the University of Potsdam, Stellenbosch University, University of Hagen, [5] and University of Basel.[6]
From 2013 to 2019, Al-Ani was an associate researcher at the Alexander von Humboldt Institute for Internet and Society, where he conducted research on the topic of "Crowd-Production in Companies" in the field of Internet-based innovation.[7] Since 2019, Al-Ani has been an associate member of the Einstein Center Digital Future (ECDF), where he is involved in a research project on the consequences of digitisation for employment in the Volkswagen Group.[8]
Al-Ani is also a co-founder and co-chair with Bassant Helmi of the Digital Arabia Network (DAN),[9] an initiative to network start-up entrepreneurs and digitisation professionals in the Arab world.[10] He is also a board member of the German-Arab Association and is a member of the advisory board of Candid Foundation.[11]
Al-Ani is a frequent contributor to German language media outlets, such as Die Zeit,[12] ZDF,[13], zenith magazine,[14] Deutschlandfunk,[15] Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung,[16] and Tagesspiegel.[17]
