From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Ayla Golf Club

Ayla Golf Club is a golf course located within the Ayla Oasis development in Aqaba, southern Jordan. The course covers approximately 800,000 square meters and includes an 18-hole championship course and a 9-hole academy course.[1]

Location

The golf club is situated along the Red Sea waterfront in Aqaba, approximately 80 miles south of Petra and about ten minutes from King Hussein International Airport. It forms part of the wider Ayla Oasis mixed-use development, which includes residential, commercial, and recreational components.[2]

History

Construction of the golf course began as part of the first phase of the Ayla Oasis project, which started in 2008. The timing of construction was influenced by the availability of a local source of brackish water used for irrigation. Greg Norman designed the course through his company, Greg Norman Golf Course Design (GNGCD).[3]

Design and Sustainability

The course was designed to integrate with the natural terrain and minimize environmental impact. Artificial lagoons created within the development provide irrigation and also function as habitats for local wildlife and migratory birds.

Club facilities were designed by Oppenheim Architecture, incorporating elements inspired by the surrounding desert and coastal landscape. The buildings include features such as ventilation channels, light filters, and patterns reflecting local architectural traditions.[4]

Facilities

The club includes practice areas such as driving ranges, short-game facilities, and indoor training studios, in addition to a pro shop and dining amenities.

Training programs and golf lessons are offered under the supervision of professionals affiliated with the PGA.[5]

Sporting Activities

The club operates in coordination with the Jordan Golf Federation to support the development of golf in Jordan, including training programs for youth and national teams.[6]

The club has hosted several tournaments, including regional and international events such as:

  • The Norman Cup
  • Turkish Airlines World Golf Club
  • The Open Championship
  • The Jordan Open Championship
  • The Arab Amateur Open Championship
  • MENA Tour events
  • The Jordan Mixed Open
  • The Jordan Junior Golf League
