Oyinkan Clifford (born June 14 2001), known professionally as Ayra Starr, is a Nigerian singer & songwriter. In 2021, she signed a record deal with Mavin Records.[1]
Early Life & Career[edit]
Starr was born and raised between Lagos and Cotonou.[2] Raised on a musical diet of 2Face, Angelique Kidjo, Shakira, Tope Alabi, Rihanna, Beyoncé, and Sia, Ayra grew up singing and writing songs with her younger brother.[3] She had started working in the beauty industry by the age of 14, regularly modelling for make-up brands in West Africa.[4] It was here that her interest in fashion took shape and her personal style began to evolve, inspired by profiles she would find in Teen Vogue.[5] Born in Benin Republic, the 19-year-old was raised between the beach city of Cotonou and the cultural hub of Lagos.[6] This mix of cultures has inspired her global approach to music, art and life. She's inspired by the regal earthiness of Angelique Kidjo, 90s fashion & music icons like Aaliyah, Rihanna's free spirit and feisty confidence, and the edgy aesthetic of emo-pop.
Signing to Mavin Records[edit]
In 2019, Ayra began sharing freestyles and covers for some of her favourite songs on Instagram. One of her freestyles, titled “Damaged” caught the attention of iconic producer and label boss, Don Jazzy. On January 21 2021, Ayra was announced as the newest addition to Mavin Records.[7] In the hours following the announcement, her self-titled debut EP and the music video to its lead single Away was released.[8] The video premiered on UK music and fashion magazine Clash.[9] The EP was received with wide acclaim as it topped the Apple Music Nigeria charts within 48 hours of its release.[10]
