Azeem Alam BEM (born 1993) is a British physician, entrepreneur, academic researcher and songwriter. He co-founded BiteWorld (BiteMedicine), an education technology company, one of the United Kingdom's fastest-growing healthcare education companies.[1][2]

He is part of the NHS Clinical Entrepreneur Programme and has contributed to more than 30 research papers in peer-reviewed journals in the areas of surgery, cancer and anaesthetics as an Honorary Clinical Research Fellow at Imperial College London.[3]

Alam was appointed a Medallist of the Order of the British Empire (BEM) in the 2021 New Year Honours for services to education during the COVID-19 pandemic.[4][5] Alam has received awards from leading institutions including the Imperial College London Emerging Alumni Leader Award, the King's College London Distinguished Alumni Leader Award and the St Alban's School Alumni Award.[6][7]

Alam is also a songwriter and has been awarded a winner in the BRIT Academy UK Songwriting Contest and the International Songwriting Awards.[8][9]

Early life and education[edit]

Alam was born in London in 1993. He studied medicine at King's College London, where he founded RISE (Recovery from Illness, Support through Empowerment). He completed an intercalated degree in Medical Sciences with Surgery and Anaesthesia at Imperial College London. For his academic work, publishing over 30 peer-reviewed publications, Alam was awarded the title Honorary Clinical Research Fellow at Imperial College London during his final year at medical school.[10]

Medical practice[edit]

Alam began his career as a physician at Guy's and St Thomas' Hospital in 2017 as an academic clinician with an interest in surgery and emergency medicine.[11] During this time, he received the Health Education England Teaching Excellence Award. He later practised at University Hospital Lewisham as a Clinical Teaching Fellow and emergency medicine physician.[12]

Entrepreneurship[edit]

At the start of the pandemic, Alam noticed that healthcare students across the globe were having difficulty accessing online technology-enabled learning resources and that many students had developed mental health issues due to these difficulties. Alam subsequently founded BiteWorld (BiteMedicine), combining content and community using a digital-first approach[13][14]. Alam recruited over 100 clinicians across the United Kingdom to deliver teaching, create online content and formed a community of over 50,000 healthcare students, providing educational material to over 100,000 students worldwide.[15][16][17]

Within 2 years, BiteMedicine now provides educational resources to over 100,000 students each month across over 30 countries globally. Alam was subsequently awarded Membership of the Academy of Medical Educators (MAcadMEd), Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) and Fellowship of the Royal Society of Arts.

Research and selected publications[edit]

Alam's research focuses on healthcare innovation, surgery and anaesthetics. He has published over 30 peer-reviewed papers in leading journals, including Nature and The Lancet, on topics such as surgery, cancer and peri-operative care.[18]
