Azhar Iqbal (born 28 November 1978) is an Indian Urdu poet, storyteller, and literary anchor from Budhana in Muzaffarnagar district, Uttar Pradesh, India. He is known for his ghazals and shayari and for presenting classical Urdu poetry using contemporary language and themes. He regularly performs at mushairas and literary festivals across India and is the founder of the Harfkaar Foundation, which works to promote Urdu and Hindi literature and traditional performing arts.

Early life

Azhar Iqbal was born in Budhana, Muzaffarnagar district, Uttar Pradesh, into a Muslim family. He spent his early years listening to poetry and oral storytelling, which played an important role in shaping his literary interests.[1] His family later moved to Meerut, Uttar Pradesh, where his interest in Urdu poetry further developed.

Education

Iqbal pursued his higher education at Aligarh Muslim University (AMU), Aligarh, during 2003–2004. AMU is widely regarded as a major center for Urdu language and literature in India, and his time there contributed to his literary growth.[2]

Career

Alongside his literary career, Azhar Iqbal has worked in the corporate sector. He joined Satin Creditcare Network Limited in Noida on 2 June 2009 as an assistant manager in the internal audit department and was promoted to manager of operations in February 2014.[3]

Iqbal is an active performer at mushairas and literary festivals across India. He has appeared at prominent events such as Jashn-e-Rekhta, Jashn-e-Bahaar, and the Shankar Shaad Mushaira.[4]

In 2015, he founded the Harfkaar Foundation, an organization dedicated to the promotion of Urdu and Hindi literature, theatre, and traditional arts such as dastangoi.[5]

On 10 October 2022, Iqbal launched his official YouTube channel, where he shares recordings of his poetry recitations and live performances.[6] In 2023, he appeared as a featured poet on The Kapil Sharma Show, alongside other poets and lyricists, bringing his work to a wider television audience.[7]

Style and influence

Azhar Iqbal’s poetry blends classical Urdu poetic forms with modern vocabulary and themes. His work often focuses on social observations, emotions, and everyday human experiences, making it accessible to younger audiences while retaining traditional literary depth.[8]

Personal life

Azhar Iqbal married Syeda Masooma on 7 February 2009. The couple has two children, a son named Abdullah Kashani and a daughter named Zahra Azhar. He has four brothers, including journalist Tabish Fareed. Actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui is his maternal uncle.[9]
