BASI History:

Founder of BASI, Rael Isacowitz

‘In 1989 Rael recognized the explosive growth that the Pilates industry was about to experience. Joseph Pilates had developed his exercise method many years before, but this was different. Rael felt a surge of interest in this forward-thinking method with its emphasis on core strength, functional movement, body alignment, and the mind-body connection.

Rael taught at the Wingate Institute of Physical Education in Israel to potential teachers and done curriculum and program development. He completed his Master’s Degree in Dance Studies (1986). He was also an athlete and practiced yoga. Given his experience in Pilates, and his teaching credentials, and requests from people to train them, he channeled his passion for Pilates into creating his first Pilates teacher training course. BASI Pilates® was born. It is now an industry leader in Pilates teacher training.’

BASI Values:

BASI, honors Pilates history and the legacy handed down by Joseph Pilates by providing it's students with a solid foundation in all aspects of the Pilates Method. As such, the entire original repertoire is addressed and all equipment is studied. BASI combines respect for history and tradition with openness to scientific and technological advances. Evolution is a necessary process and an integral part of inspiring the continuous search and discovery of strength, grace and ultimate well-being.

Marathon Mat®

Conceived by Rael Isacowitz, this intensive, two-hour session focuses on the multiple possibilities of the Mat Work, which is the foundation of the Pilates method. Approaching the Mat Work as a warm-up and conditioning routine for fit individuals and athletes, the Marathon Mat is challenging, invigorating and eye-opening. Based on the BASI approach to the work, the workshop builds a meditation in motion, using both classical and contemporary exercises and featuring the BASI Flow Sequence.

The BASI Pilates Block System®

Devised by BASI Pilates founder Rael Isacowitz, the BASI Block System is a specialized ‘filing’ system for the hundreds of exercises in the Pilates repertoire. It categorizes them in a logical sequence that ensures the progressive structuring of classes within a flexible framework. This system is the foundation of the BASI methodology. The Block System encourages progressive thinking within a structure. It enables the instructor to construct a class that is balanced and addresses all planes of movement and multiple muscle groups. The Block System categorizes each exercise in the Pilates repertoire into one or more of 12 Blocks: Foot Work Spinal Articulation and Lateral Flexion are examples; and there are multiple exercises to choose from in each Block. The criteria which come into play when choosing an exercise include things like the experience, the level and goals of the client, the needs of the class such at the time, and the structure and flow.

F2 System

The F2 System training is to learn more about the new BASI Systems F2 Arm Chair and Spine Corrector, as well as the F2 addition to all the traditional Pilates apparatus. Participants are introduced to new concepts and learn extensive repertoire based on the BASI Block System.
