BHS Direct Limited, trading as British Home Shopping, is a British e-commerce company specialising in UK-made products across homeware, fashion, innovation, and gifting sectors. It is widely recognised as the digital successor to the online division of British Home Stores (BHS), the former high street retailer.
History
The original BHS Direct was launched as the online arm of British Home Stores during the brand’s final years in operation. Following the collapse of BHS in 2016 and the sale of its assets to the Al Mana Group, the online presence was briefly maintained via the relaunched BHS.com site.
In 2018, BHS.com ceased trading under Al Mana, with the website closing on 27 June 2018 and final customer deliveries completed by 5 July 2018.[1]
Shortly before this closure, legal steps were undertaken to defend the independent rights to the name "BHS Direct". A formal consultation process led to the successful re-establishment of BHS Direct Limited as a standalone retail brand, legally distinct from the former BHS.com and Al Mana operations.
Relaunch and Mission
As of 2019[update], BHS Direct Limited operates independently, using the BHS Direct name under confirmed legal rights. The company’s mission is to support the revival of British industry by showcasing high-quality UK-manufactured goods. It places particular emphasis on promoting national apprenticeship schemes and creating opportunities for emerging British brands.
Operations
The company operates through its website bhsdirect.com, structured into thematic departments:
- Home Sweet Home – homeware, kitchen, and lifestyle products
- Travel & Adventure – glamping, outdoor gear, and leisure items
- Innovation of Tomorrow – tech-forward products and British-designed innovation
- Women of Style – women’s fashion and accessories
- British Gentleman – men’s clothing, grooming, and gift items
- Little B’s – children’s fashion and educational toys
The site operates on a curated marketplace model, offering both direct sales and opportunities for UK brands and manufacturers to sell via the platform.
Branding and Legacy
BHS Direct is a completely independent business that retains a connection in name to the original online entity of the BHS heritage, while establishing a modern identity centred around British values, innovation, and sustainability. The brand explicitly avoids fast fashion and mass-imported goods, choosing instead to focus on craftsmanship, quality, and community enterprise.
Legal and Trademark
In early 2018, legal defence was undertaken to retain the rights to the "BHS Direct" name and logo following challenges raised during the transition from Al Mana Group’s ownership of related digital trademarks. A consultation, extension request, and formal response established BHS Direct’s independent status as a legal successor entity.[2]
