Since 2015 the BMW Startup Garage is the Venture Client unit of the BMW Group.[1] It searches for innovations that will have a significant impact in any area of the BMW Group.[2][3] The program's purpose is to find the “best” startups and enable them to become long-term partners of the BMW Group as a strategy to strengthen the companies' innovations.[4][5]

The BMW Startup Garage engages a startup as a venture client at an early stage while the startups solution is still a prototype.[6][7] In contrast to Corporate Venture Capitalists the BMW Startup Garage doesn't invest but instead buys products from it’s startups.[8] Giving access to the internal expertise and business units the BMW Startup Garage considers itself as a first step into the automotive sector.[9]

The program that the BMW Startup Garage offers is on average a 12-week validation process which is built on four key pillars: Build, Sell, Learn and Network. At the start of the program requirements are communicated for the integration of the startup’s technology. This prototype is then sold to BMW as a service or product which will be tested in a pilot project. While the prototype is being verified the startup will take part in workshops to further learn about the processes of an OEM and BMW especially. The BMW Startup Garage also organizes internal events where the startups get to present themselves which allows them to find more departments for collaboration and network with interested parties.[10][11][12][13][14]
