BM
Matthew Kim (born October 20, 1992), also know by his stage name, BM (비엠; short for Big Matthew) is a Korean-American rapper-songwriter, composer and producer under DSP Media. He is a member of the co-ed group KARD..[1]
BM released his first digital single "Broken Me"[2] on June 9, 2021 in partnership with VR film company, VIVE Studios, and is subsequently releasing his first digital-triple-single album called 13IVI: The First Statement.[3]
Early life[edit]
Matthew Kim was born on October 20, 1992 in Los Angeles, California[4] with his parents and two younger brothers, Austin and Hugh. Growing up in Upland, he gained an affinity for music and dance at an early age at Upland High School and attended Cal Poly Pomona with a major in Psychology. During college, he joined a dance team which curated his love for hip-hop and R&B music[5]
Career[edit]
While on the dance team in college, BM performed at the World of Dance competition in California. His mother signed him up for the Los Angeles K-Pop Star audition track after seeing his performance for the first time during said competition. He was reluctant to participate in the competition due to his poor Korean language skills, but ended up passing the audition and traveled to South Korea to start his career as an idol in 2011. Once in South Korea, he went through three auditions for the televised version of K-Pop Star, where he was saved from elimination by K-Pop Idol and judge, BoA, who BM always gives thanks to for getting him into the South Korean music industry.
After his stint on K-Pop Star, BM trained for four and a half years in total before his debut as an idol in the group KARD under DSP Media. He was supposed to debut in a hip-hop duo with KARD's main rapper, J.Seph, but that fell through. He and J.Seph were also special judges on the seventh episode of dance cover competition show, Stage K. He fully debuted as the main dancer, lead rapper and vocalist of co-ed kpop group KARD under DSP Media on July 19, 2017. He represents the letter 'K' and the King card in a deck.[6] During the group's debut party, BM explained that his card is the strongest and most dependable one, therefore, that makes him the most solid foundation of the team.
In 2017, BM was an MC for talk show ASC, or Afterschool Club, for three episodes that aired on April 25, May 23rd, and July 18th, respectively[7] and a guest on variety shows such as JTBC's Shall We Walk Together with Snuper's Woosung and VICTON's Heochan.[8] and MBC's Video Star with labemate, J.Seph[9] BM has also appeared in various music videos such as Rainbow's Sunshine, KARA's Mamma Mia, Goo Hara's Choco Chip Cookies and ZSUN's (KARD's choreographer) I'm On My Wave. He is also a co-host on a Dive Studios's podcast called Get Real[10] featuring BM from KARD, Ashley Choi from Ladies' Code and Peniel from BTOB.[11]
BM was on the cover of the May 2019 issue of South Korea's Men's Health magazine. He has been ranked #47 on TC Candler's[12] 'The 100 Most Handsome Faces of 2017'[13] and #71 on TC Candler's 'The 100 Most Handsome Faces of 2018'.[14]
BM is also a self-proclaimed SoundCloud[15] rapper with several tracks such as Beastmode, Better Myself, AYWI and Boy2Man. He has done covers of Mic Lowry's Don't Tempt Me and most recently Lee Hi's Holo. BM has also featured on songs created by his younger brother Austin Kim, who goes by AK DIORR, such as PLAYBOY MANSION, VVS BABY and EAGER. His first official solo song is called Broken Me which released on June 9, 2021[16] and his first official solo album is called 13IVI:The First Statement and is being released on July 2, 2021.[17]
Personal life[edit]
BM speaks Korean and English fluently.[18]
He has spoken about his struggles with insomnia and anxiety[19] on multiple occasions.
After moving to South Korea, BM spent his time doing various odd jobs, including passing out flyers and teaching English as a private tutor while waiting to debut.[20]
BM created a athletic streetwear brand called StaydiumLA.[21][22] After becoming a meme during a V-Live,[23] he created the Big Tiddie Gang[24][25] and merch to accompany it, in which the proceeds went to awareness and research for breast cancer. He has since curated another clothing collection under StaydiumLA called HEALERS,[26][27] which donates a portion of its proceeds towards Stomp Out Bullying.[28] BM also co-founded a higher-end fashion label called BONSAINTZ[29] with his crew of friends, which include businessman Andrew Jeong and Woosung from K-Pop band, The Rose.
