B is for Build is a Youtube channel that is mostly known for its car build videos. The web-based channel was created, and is hosted by Chris Steinbacher.

The name of the channel is a reference to the expression "built, not bought". This expression is often used when referring to tuned and custom built cars being better than stock cars in that everyone can go out and buy a car, but not everyone can build a car.

The channel is known for doing controversial builds which are often considered impossible (due to time constraints or skill level). The channel has close to 150,000,000 views and over 1.15 million subscribers on from 24 November 2019.[1]

Throughout the life of the show, Chris has appeared on multiple other Youtube channels like Tavarish and Fitment Industries, and on podcasts like The Smoking Tire[2] and Konig Wheels[3].

Format[edit]

Most episodes open with Chris talking to the camera, giving updates on the channel, describing what the plan for the episode is, followed by the intro of the show. If there's a sponsor for the episode, this will usually be mentioned right after the intro.

After this Chris will go into more detail on what he or the team will be doing which is usually followed by several time-lapses shots set to music where we see the work being done. This is broken up by Chris talking to the camera and describing certain parts of the work in more detail.

Most episodes end with a description of what the audience can expect in future episodes, some further channel updates and often a suggestion to click the subscribe channel. After this Chris ends the episode by saying "peace" and making a gesture towards the camera after which the show's theme song "Cloud Ten" by Faraoh sets in and the videos fades to black.

History[edit]

Chris Steinbacher started the Youtube channel as a place to document his adventures with his friends and their cars. In the channel's early episodes, in which Chris works on his Subaru BRZ, he sometimes jokingly refers to Youtube's revenue sharing as a motivator for making the videos.[4]

Full-time Youtube[edit]

On 14 January, 2017 the channel posted a video called "I Got Laid Off.. And Filmed It ... #BisforBROKE" in which Chris shows the audience how he lost his job as a senior software engineer due to his company downsizing.

Throughout the video Chris talks about how he's going to use this opportunity to focus on the Youtube channel full-time.

Buying a shop[edit]

B is for Build started with builds done in Chris's backyard. Later on he starts renting a garage elsewhere in Portland to continue his builds. In 27 February 2018, in the video "IM BUYING A SHOP!!!" he announced that his landlord intended to sell the house and garage and that he has decided to buy it and rent out the house to a friend.

Relationship with Chelsea[edit]

Throughout the show, we regularly see peaks into Chris' personal life, like his relationship with Chelsea. He describes much of his relationship in the episode "Happily Ever After! The BIFB Engagement" which was posted to the channel on 14 November 2019. They have been together since before B is for Build and Chelsea is seen throughout the show, helping out Chris and the team with the builds. She is also seen in multiple episodes in which Chris, Chelsea and their friends attend trivia nights. In December 2017, Chris buys a E60 BMW M5 which he later gives to Chelsea after they repair it.[5]

They got engaged in November 2019, following SEMA 2019. As they're both big fans of Disney Land, he proposes at Disney Land Las Vegas in the Jungle Cruise attraction.

Notable builds[edit]

BRZ builds[edit]

The channel started out with Jeff and Chris trying to rebuild a wrecked Subaru BRZ. This car is called the 'Plan A' on the channel. Later on Chris buys another BRZ which he calls the 'Plan B'. The Plan A BRZ eventually gets 2JZ swapped.

Lotus Evora[edit]

On 28 January 2016 Chris unveils the channel's new car, a 2014 Lotus Evora, in the video "B is for Build - Lotus Evora Unveil". This build got the channel a lot of attention as many said it could not be fixed due to the car having severe damage to the body after it had been in a roll-over accident. The car ends up successfully being rebuilt and daily driven by Chris.

Datsun 240z[edit]

On 7 April 2018, the channel posted the video "Meet The New Build!" in which Chris makes it seem as if he's going to be rebuilding an E60 BMW M5. Something he had already done before. Later it turns out he isn't actually going to rebuild the M5, but instead will swap much of the M5 over into a Datsun 240z body.

This again got the channel a lot of attention as many said it couldn't be done. Eventually the build ends up being successful and is shown off in the Konig Wheel stand at SEMA 2018.

Lamborghini Huracan[edit]

On 15 March 2019, the channel posted the video "I Bought a Totaled Lamborghini Huracan from a Salvage Auction & I'm going to Rebuild It!" in which Chris unveils a totalled green Lamborghini Huracán Spyder which he says will help him build a "budget Lamborghini" for SEMA 2019.

In following episodes, Chris unveils that he will be building a twin-turbo GM LS V8 powered, wide-body Lamborghini Huracán out of a burnt out Lamborghini Huracán shell and that the car will be displayed on the Garrett Motion stand at SEMA 2019.
