Ba (meaning space or place in Japanese language) is a concept of shared contexts and meanings in a certain time and space that create a basis for knowledge to be created and shared.[1] It can also be thought of as a shared space of emerging relationships. This space can be physical (e.g., office or fragmented marketplace), virtual (e.g., email or conference call), mental (e.g., shared experiences, ideas, dreams), or a combination of them. Ba concept is considered to originate from the Japanese philosophy of Kitaro Nishida, being further developed by Shimizu.[2]

Types of Ba[edit]

There are four types of Ba, each corresponding to a different sector on the SECI model of knowledge dimensions.[1]

Originating Ba[edit]

Originating Ba is an environment that offers prerequisites for knowledge creation. In these environments, individuals face other parties. These physical face-to-face experiences and interaction situations are the keys to transforming and transferring tacit knowledge. On organizational issues, a common vision and operating culture are closely linked to a lack of originating Ba. On the SECI model, it corresponds to the socialization phase.[3]

Interacting Ba[edit]

Interacting Ba (also known as Dialoguing Ba) is an environment where interactions are made and explicit knowledge is formed from tacit knowledge. Through these interactions, such as dialogue, individuals’ mental models and skills are refined into common concepts and terms. Interacting Ba is formed more consciously than Originating Ba. On the SECI model, it corresponds to the externalization phase.[3]

Cyber Ba[edit]

Cyber Ba (also known as Spatial Ba or Systemising Ba) is an environment for merging sets of explicit information. Unlike other Bas, Cyber Ba is a virtual environment of interactions, consisting of computer networks, various computer-based group work environments, and databases. On the SECI model, it corresponds to the merging phase (also known as the combination phase).[3]

Exercising Ba[edit]

Exercising Ba is an environment of real or simulated situations, where formal and organizational knowledge is made use of. Exercising Ba supports the conversion of explicit information to tacit information. On the SECI model, it corresponds to the internalization phase.[3]
