Babar Shabbir (born in 1984) is a Pakistani-born Australian scientist and researcher, known for his significant contributions to the field of X-ray sensing and detection. He is the leading scientist in discovering the world's thinnest X-ray detector1.
Early Life
Babar commenced his educational journey in his native village, Jhungal, situated approximately 80 kilometers from Rawalpindi city. He attended the local school, Master Sabar School, which was the sole English-medium school in the area. Recognizing his aptitude for studies, Babar's mother made the decision to send him to Rawalpindi city for secondary schooling. He resided with his father in the city and enrolled in PAF Inter College Chaklala (now Faziaia School, Rawalpindi), where he excelled academically.
His success in high school paved the way for higher education, and Babar pursued a bachelor's degree in Mathematics and Physics at Sirsyed College, Mall Road Rawalpindi. Eager to delve deeper into his academic pursuits, he furthered his education at Quaid I Azam University Islamabad, earning both a master's and MPhil degree in Physics. His MPhil research focused on the field of superconductivity.
While pursuing MPhil degree, Dr. Babar started his career as a scientific officer in the Radiation Group at the Pakistan Nuclear Regulatory Authority. In 2011, he was awarded a prestige scholarship from the University of Wollongong for his Ph.D. studies. Dr. Babar successfully graduated with a Ph.D. in Engineering in 2016.
Career and Research
Following his doctoral studies, Dr. Babar took on a joint postdoctoral position at Shenzhen, China, and Monash University, focusing on Optoelectronics and Photonics in Prof. Qiaoliang Bao's group. From 2020 to 2023, he worked with Professor Jacek Jasieniak at Monash University, contributing significantly to the field of X-ray sensing and detection devices.
Achievements
He developed a direct type of soft X-ray detector based on 1.7nm thick tin mono-sulfide (SnS) nanosheet, which is the world’s thinnest soft X-ray detector in the X-ray detection & imaging industry. With a response time of a few milli-seconds, this device can produce an image almost instantaneously with excellent resolution. This advance will enable real-time detection of proteins and cells interacting within biological systems and at interfaces2. Babar has published over 40 papers cited over 1500 times, for an h-index of 21.
Awards and Honors
- Babar is the winner of the Australian-American Fulbright Fellowship, funded by RMIT Vice Chancellor Fellowship scheme for 2024.
- His paper titled “Soft X‐ray Detectors Based on SnS Nanosheets for the Water Window Region” demonstrates the world's thinnest X-ray detector. This manuscript achieved the Exciton Science Best Publication Award 2021 - Best Postdoctoral Research Fellow Publication at the annual conference of ARC Exciton Science.
