The group released its debut album "We've got something to say and you better listen"[3] in June of 2018.

The band's first EP , Monkey Food[4], was released in January of 2018. The singles "Roadtrip" and "RocknRolla" reached mainstream success in the local Puertorican music scene. This EP opened the pathway for the band to book shows in the most important venues of the island.

History

2005–2012: Formation and early years

Guitarist and back vocalist Ruben Arias original from Guaynabo[5], Puerto Rico, created the record label "Whynotmusic" in 2005. Arias studied Audio engineer[6] and his first passion was playing the drums. With influences like At the Drive in[7], NOFX[8], Rancid[9], Sublime[10], Green Day[11] and many more, Ruben starts to experiment with the guitar. Carla Rodriguez has been around the music scene since little. She developed her love for music because of her grandfather, Pellin Rodriguez[12] being part of the multi-famous Puertorican salsa super-group named El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico[13]. Later on her life she discovered her love for the base and started playing in local rock bands. In 2012, a mutual friend of Arias and Rodriguez introduce them at a local bar in the Rio Piedras[14] area. Arias came with the idea of making a band with Rodriguez as lead vocals, she later agreed.

WhyNot

2012-2015

The band was initially named WhyNot because of Ruben Arias own record label. The name was later changed in 2015 to Baby Bhang because of "WhyNot" being a popular used name. Whynot's music first experiments paved the way for the current sounds the group has. In November of 2014, Alex Luciano joins the band as the official drummer.

Baby Bhang

2015-Present

The band begun the process of recording their first EP named "Monkey Food". This EP consists of five studio recorded tracks. Monkey Food was the beginning stages of the band's sound. Some songs of the EP were created while the band was still named WhyNot. The songs recorded came from ideas Ruben Arias had back in 2007. The official release date for all musical platforms was on January of 2018. A few months later, they released their first studio recorded album named "We've Got Something To Say and You Better Listen". The album has a total of twelve studio recorded songs that vary in sound and style. In songs like "Nite" and "Limbo", Carla Rodriguez incorporates the use of the MicroKorg[15] keyboard giving them an 80's[16] synthesizer vibe. "Fist Face" is what the band calls "the album's single", the song shows their true pop punk[17] influences. Baby Bhang started playing live shows with temporary bassists so that Carla Rodriguez could play the keyboards and perform freely on stage. Later on the band decided for Rodriguez to play base, and when playing keyboard in some songs, loop the base with a pedal.

Musical style and influences

Baby Bhang's[18] music style has generally been categorized as pop punk[19], alternative rock[20], pop rock[21], power pop[22]. Fernando E. Correa (music journalist) had written after listening to the band's Ep Monkey Food, "The band has the ability to mix lighter and rougher sounds to create something different. They present their influences on their sleeves while lyrically explore different techniques that set them apart from other groups in the field of pop punk"[23]. Baby Bhang influences mostly come from different genres like pop punk[24] bands such as Paramore[25] , The Offspring[26] , reggae[27] influences like No Doubt[28] and some new wave pop rock[29] synthpop[30] like Cyndi Lauper.
