Babymoon

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

A babymoon is a vacation taken by couples when one of them is pregnant.

Babymoons are often taken in luxurious locations, as the babymoon is expected to be the last vacation that the couple will have alone until their child leaves home when they reach legal age. Babymoon travel is typically taken during the second trimester of pregnancy, when prenatal complications and preterm birth risk is at its lowest.[1]

First coined by social anthropologist Sheila Kitzinger in 1994 as a term referencing the postnatal time period that is spent with parent and child, the term has evolved with time to indicate a vacation period.[2]

History

Sheila Kitzinger was the first person[citation needed] to print the term "babymoon" in 1994 describing the honeymoon-like phase of parenting immediately after giving birth.

The term took on a separate cultural meaning in the early 2000s when celebrity couples’ trips during their pregnancies were called "babymoons" by pop culture magazines. The term was picked up by travel agencies and bloggers to describe the last trip parents will take before giving birth.

Etymology

One of the first uses of the word was as a marketing tool in 2004 for a luxury resort.[3]

Zika

With the outbreak of Zika in 2015, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) released a statement in January 2016 cautioning potential babymoon travelers.[4]
