Kenny Grey, (born May 13th, 1990) known as Backpack Wonka, is an American rapper and songwriter from Silver Spring, Maryland. He is notable for songs such as "300" and "Ask 4 Anything". He has recently released his newest EP "CHARM Files" available on all streaming platforms.
Early Life[edit]
Kenny Grey was born in Silver Spring, Maryland to immigrating parents from Cameroon. He attended Blake High School and later graduated from Towson University. He considers Prince Georges and Montgomery county area his home. With a production credit on much of the work he creates, he sites Kanye West as a major influence.
Career[edit]
Backpack Wonka started his music career mainly as a song producer and engineer. Creating a working core of area talent, many of his collaborators urged him to display his skills on the microphone.
Notably known by his alter ego, Backpack Wonka, his core fanbase understands many songs and stories come from the perspective of Kenny Grey. The alter ego derived from his love for a variety of sweets and experiences living in Baltimore and attending College.
Backpack Wonka's draws from varying influences, but living in Baltimore for over 5 years definitely shaped some of the sound and direction of his music. He has several surprising features and credits from some of Baltimore's most notorious artists, showing he can work in studio with artist from all urban genres.
He released his debut mixtape "Welcome to Wonka's World" in 2015 on the heels of a few sold out events, notably an opening show with K. Michelle. To the chagrin of many of his listeners, another project would not come until 2017, with the release of "Wonka's World (vol. 2)."
With some scattered singles in between, his latest project "CHARM Files" released late November 2022.
