Bad Bad Hats is an American Dream pop[1] band, formed in 2012 in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The original lineup consisted of lead vocalist and guitarist Kerry Alexander, guitarist and drummer Chris Hoge, and bassist Noah Boswell.[2] In 2013, they signed to Afternoon Records after catching the label's attention at a college Battle of the Bands. [3]

Their 2015 debut album Psychic Reader caught the attention of outlets including The New Yorker, NPR [4], Pitchfork (website) [5], and Paste (magazine) [6]. Since the release of Psychic Reader, Bad Bad Hats has toured the U.S. extensively, supporting artists including Margaret Glaspy , Hippo Campus, The Front Bottoms, and Third Eye Blind.

The band's second album, Lightning Round was released August 3, 2018.[7] The name comes from the part of a game show that shares the same name, where Alexander says is "where you really need to prove yourself". [8]

It was announced after the recording of Lightning Round that Noah Boswell was leaving the band to pursue a master's degree.[9] Davison was recruited for the Lightning Round recording sessions, and subsequently accepted an offer to become a full-time member of the band.

History[edit]

Alexander and Hoge originally formed Bad Bad Hats as students at Macalester College in Saint Paul, Minnesota, before adding Boswell to form the trio.[10] [11]

The band got it's name from children's picture book Madeline and the Bad Hat.[12]

All three original members of the band DJ'ed shows at their college's radio station, where Alexander was manager. The band’s first official performance was at a campus battle of the bands sponsored by the station. Bad Bad Hats lost that competition to a funk band, but they managed to impress one of the judges—Ian Anderson, founder of the influential Minneapolis indie rock label Afternoon Records, which had helped launch the career of Haley Bonar.[13]

Alexander and Hoge began dating soon after the inception of Bad Bad Hats. They got married in September 2017.[14]
