Baghdad operation was the name of the operation of the Islamic Republic of Iran Air Force during the Iran-Iraq war on July 21, 1982, over Baghdad, the capital of Iraq.

Details[edit]

This operation was carried out with two McDonnell Douglas F-4 Phantom II planes in order to show Baghdad's airspace as unsafe and with the aim of preventing the holding of the summit of the Non-Aligned Movement in Baghdad.[1][2] In this operation, Iranian pilots succeeded in bombarding Al-Dura refinery with MK82 bombs. Although the plane of pilot Mahmoud Eskandari and Naser Bagheri was hit, he was able to return to Iran. But Col. Abbas Doran's plane was severely damaged by a Roland missile. His helper Mansour Kazmian jumped out of the plane with a parachute, but Abbas Doran fell and died in a field near Al-Rashid Hotel.[3][4] Considering that Baghdad's airspace was protected by a 57mm anti-aircraft gun equipped with radar as well as SAM-2, SAM-3, SAM-6 and Roland missile systems, the risk of not returning from this flight was between 85 and 90%.[5]
