Bagley, Alabama

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Bagley, Alabama is an unincorporated community in north Jefferson County, Alabama. It is located approximately 6 miles north of Graysville, Alabama.

History[edit]

Bagley is a very old community in north Jefferson County and is known to date back to the 1830's. Early residents migrated from Georgia, Tennessee, and the Carolinas to farm the rich soil. In the 1800's most area families were large and worked their farms together to ensure survival. Any formal education usually took place in local churches. Based on church documents Good Hope Missionary Baptist, Liberty Primitive Baptist and Old Victory Church of Christ all doubled as schoolhouses from the mid 1800's to the early 1920's.

Early businesses in the Bagley included a grist mill, cotton gin and saw mill. Most of Bagley's earliest residents are buried at Good Hope Cemetery (1856), McCormack Cemetery (circa 1890's) and Lawler Cemetery (1845).

Bagley Jr. High School opened in 1923 on land donated to the county by Andrew Jackson Tanner and Ollice B. Tanner. The school was named for Mrs. W.J. Bagley, a prominent member of the Jefferson County Board of Education who was instrumental in its organization. The first school at Bagley was moved from "Old Victory" on Warrior Jasper Road. The present day site at the intersection of Bagley Road and Tate Mill Road was chosen because of its central location. The community quickly adopted the name of its new school.

For almost a century the heart of the community has been its school. Bagley Jr. High has served many purposes throughout the decades including being the area's polling place for state and national elections.

Geography[edit]

Though its school zone and voting district is much larger, Bagley's boundaries are loosely defined. It borders neighboring Corner, Alabama and the Walker County line. Bagley appears on the Sipsey U.S. Geological Survey map. Bagley is located at latitude 33.756 and longitude 87.002.
