Bailey Marie Hutchins (née McBreen; April 14, 1998 – February 7, 2025) was an American social media influencer and registered nurse. She was best known for documenting her journey with stage 4 colon cancer on Instagram and TikTok and being an advocate for early colon cancer screenings.
Nursing career
Bailey Hutchins worked as a registered nurse in Florida prior to and during the early stages of her illness. She earned her Bachelors degree in nursing at the University of Central Florida.[1] Her medical background informed much of her online content, particularly her efforts to explain medical procedures, symptoms, and patient experiences in accessible terms.
Cancer diagnosis
In 2021, during a vacation in Tennessee, Bailey Hutchins was burping excessively 5 to 10 times. Though she dismissed it, she eventually stated that it was the earliest signs she had colon cancer despite it being a unusual symptom of the disease.[2] Her symptoms worsened over the next few months and included gastrointestinal distress, loss of appetite, stomach pain, and acid reflux. In January of 2023, she was diagnosed with stage 3 colon cancer after a CT scan showed a tumor in her colon following multiple inconclusive tests. After the diagnosis, she had emergency surgery to remove the tumor in January before starting chemotherapy that continued through August of 2023.[3]
However, her colon cancer progressed to stage 4 with peritoneal metastasis following routine bloodwork indicated something was wrong, and follow-up tests revealed more masses, which had spread to her peritoneum, which lines the abdominal cavity, pelvis and some organs. As she was battling the disease, she documented it on her social media platforms Instagram and TikTok.[4] In January 2025, a month before her death, she was hospitalized again and underwent surgery.[5]
Death
Hutchins died on February 7, 2025 following a two-year battle with stage 4 colon cancer. Her husband announced her death on February 8 on her TikTok and Instagram accounts and praised her for her strength showed during her battle. Her final post on TikTok before her death was on January 19 when she updated her followers telling them "I am alive".[6] Prior to her death, her husband Caden shared a brief update on January 26 on her account that they are taking it "day by day".[5]
Personal life
Bailey Hutchins was survived by her husband Caden. The two started dating in 2013 and were married 10 years later in 2023. She is also survived by her sister Ashley Rolfes and family.[5]
