Baird Hersey
Baird Hersey[1] (March 30, 1949, New York City) is a multi-genre composer, musician, and vocalist. He is best known for his jazz ensemble The Year of the Ear[2] (1975-80) and his harmonic vocal group Prana[3] (2000-2018). He is a National Endowment for the Arts Composition Fellow[4].
Background
His father is the author John Hersey[5]. His mother, Frances Ann Cannon[6] was a Broadway producer. In 1967, he was a member of the film crew for DA Pennebaker's Monterey Pop[7]. He attended Wesleyan University[8] in 1968, where he studied ethnomusicology and guitar. He then attended Bennington College[9], where he graduated with a BA in composing in 1973.
Career
He has appeared at venues throughout the US and Europe as varied as The Berlin Jazz Festival, MTV, and a benefit for the Dalai Lama Foundation[10] with artists as different as Doane Perry, Krishna Das, and Nexus[11]. In the 1980s, he composed extensively for WABC Television. He is the author of "The Practice of Nada Yoga"[12], a book on sound meditation. He was on the faculty of The California Institute of Integral Studies[13] for four years. He has led workshops at Bennington College, MIT[14], McGill University[15] and Harvard University[16].
