Baldi's Basics in Education and Learning (or simply known as Baldi's Basics) is a free-to-play indie survival horror video game that was released on March 31, 2018 as a beta by Micah McGonigal (alias Mystman12) for Microsoft Windows, MacOS and Linux. The objective involves the player finding all of their friend's seven notebooks that are scattered throughout the school without being caught by their teacher, Baldi, and being hindered by the other students and faculty.[1]
The game was initially made as an entry in the annual Meta-Game Jam, where it received 2nd place.[2] The game and its art style is a spoof on 1990's edutainment games such as Sonic's Schoolhouse,[3] and quickly gained popularity for its absurd and often surreal nature,[4] with several popular YouTubers such as Markiplier and PewDiePie having videos made on the game.[5] The game itself was made in a few days[6] and is currently still in development. The developer later launched a Kickstarter for the game, where he announced that the full game will be released sometime in late 2019 or early 2020. The Kickstarter was successful, attaining a total $61,375, $11,375 above the original goal,[7] along with an additional $648.00 on Backerkit (for preordering the game).[8] As of now, the only playable version of this game is the demo, but McGonigal has confirmed that a full game is in the works[9], and he announced that some of the features would be randomly-generated levels, new characters, and an elevator.
Gameplay[edit]
Baldi's Basics in Education & Learning currently has 3 playable game modes, which are Story Mode, Endless Mode, and Field Trip. A birthday-themed version of the game, called Baldi's Basics Birthday Bash, was released on April 1st, 2019, celebrating the game's 1st anniversary.
Story Mode[edit]
This game mode starts with Baldi introducing himself to the player. As the player goes on to collect the first notebook they will be greeted by the You Can Think! Pad™, a device showing a set of three mathematical problems, presented by Baldi. After the player collects the first notebook Baldi will reward the player with a quarter. When the player activates the second notebook, the third and final question is replaced by an unintelligible string of numbers, and Baldi's reading will become glitched and distorted. This question has no correct answer and replaces all final questions from the second notebook onward.
Upon getting a question wrong, Baldi will start to chase the player out of anger, signaling his movement by making slapping sounds from his ruler hitting his hand. The more questions the player answers incorrectly, the faster Baldi will chase them. If the player gets caught by Baldi, they will be returned to the game's menu screen. The player can find several items scattered along the school that can help them escape from Baldi. After the player collects all seven notebooks, Baldi will congratulate the player, and laugh at their escape efforts while tracking them down. To escape the school, players will need to go through four exits in order to leave the building. However, this is very difficult to do, as Baldi is at his fastest speed yet, and will catch the player in a matter of seconds if they cannot outrun him.
Once the first exit is reached, the school turns a deep red color. Additionally, Arts and Crafters will be hostile. This state, dubbed "Final Mode" is akin to some sort of boss fight, albeit there is no actual fighting.
Endless Mode[edit]
Endless Mode is identical to Story Mode, with the exception that the notebooks keep reappearing, therefore making it impossible for the player to exit the school. The goal in this game mode is to collect as many notebooks as possible before being caught by Baldi.
Field Trip[edit]
Field Trip is a demo released by McGonigal which will later be a game mode in the full game. The player is sent on a Field Trip with Baldi and the main objective is to collect sticks to keep the campfire aflame. A new character, Cloudy Copter, will occasionally appear in game to blow the fire out. If the campfire goes out, Baldi will chase the player, and give them a game over if he catches them. Unlike the main game, it is impossible to escape Baldi, as his speed in this game is much faster than in the main game, and will catch the player in a few seconds.
Birthday Bash[edit]
Baldi's Basics Birthday Bash is an alternate version of Baldi's Basics created by McGonigal to celebrate to game's 1st anniversary. Aside from the birthday theme and decorations strewn around the halls, this game is very similar to the main game. However, at the end, all the characters gather in the cafeteria for a birthday surprise, and the player will be risen above the floor. If the player moves around the large candle, they can enter a secret hallway that can lead to another ending with Filename2.
Characters[edit]
The player can encounter a total of seven characters in the game, and each of them has a unique trait that can either help the player escape Baldi or hinder their progress, and one new character in the Field Trip demo. In the full game, over 25 more characters will be added.
Baldi: The titular antagonist of the game, and the only character than can give the player a game over. While Baldi never stops chasing the player, several items can be obtained that can distract him or hinder him. If the player is far away enough, Baldi can lose track of them, making him wander the halls until the player opens a door or comes back into his line of sight.
Principal of the Thing: The principal of the school. He can be seen walking around the school's halls. Principal of the Thing is passive and will not attack the player, however if he sees the player breaking one of the school rules, he will chase the player and put them in detention for a short amount of time. While in detention, the player cannot escape, leaving them vulnerable for attack should Baldi catch up, unless the player uses WD-NoSquee on the door. Each time the player is put in detention, detention time increases by 15 seconds with a maximum of 99 seconds. He did have some unused voice lines, one of which said: "No stabbing people with pencils in the halls." but this was removed in the actual game.
Playtime: A girl who is seen walking around the halls. She will force the player to play jump rope if she happens to catch them (unless she is in her cooldown time); they have to jump the rope five times before they are able to escape. She can be avoided by entering classrooms or cutting her rope with safety scissors. The latter option comes with a risk, however, since the player can be put in detention for bullying if Principal of the Thing sees them cutting the jump rope.
It's a Bully: A bully who will appear in a random location in the school, blocking the player's path. If the player passes by him, he will take a random item from their inventory. If the player doesn't have any items, he won't let them pass. However, if the Principal of the Thing sees It's a Bully in the halls, he will put him in detention for bullying, helping the player.
In the Field Trip demo, he hides behind a tree, and constantly follows the player when they are in his line of sight. If the player turns and looks at him, he will stop, but if he catches up to the player, he will take the firewood the player was holding, forcing them to collect more, increasing the risk of Baldi becoming active.
Gotta Sweep: A green broom that will become active two minutes after the start of the game. When active, Gotta Sweep pushes everything in its path, including Baldi and the player. Gotta Sweep can either help the player by pushing them or Baldi away, or hinder them by sweeping them closer to Baldi. Gotta Sweep can be escaped by entering a classroom since it only sweeps the halls while active.
Arts and Crafters: A sock puppet that is passive until the player collects all seven notebooks. If the player has collected all of the notebooks, Arts and Crafters will become jealous of the player, and charge at them if he sees them, teleporting them and Baldi back to the beginning of the game.
1st Prize: A robot who was added in version 1.3. When it notices the player, it turns very slowly until they are facing them, and then charges at the player at full speed, pushing them with it, and trapping them in place when it stops, making it difficult for the player to escape. If the player is pushed by 1st Prize, they can use the safety scissors to cut its wires to make it spin in place for 15 seconds. However, this will put the player in detention for bullying if Principal of the Thing sees them cutting 1st Prize's wires.
Cloudy Copter: A character that only appears on the Field Trip demo, Cloudy Copter will occasionally appear to try and blow out the player's campfire. If the player doesn't show up in time to ward him off, the fire will be completely blown out, resulting in a game over.
Items[edit]
There are a total of fourteen items in the game, one being in the Field Trip demo, and three being in Birthday Bash, all with varying functions to help the player escape Baldi.
Notebooks: The primary item of the game. There are seven notebooks inside classrooms around the school, which the player has to collect. After the first notebook is solved, all subsequent notebooks will all have a corrupted third problem that is always unsolvable, making Baldi angrier and starting to hunt the player down. In Endless Mode, notebooks keep reappearing, as the main point of the game is to collect as many notebooks as you can before Baldi catches you
Quarter: This item is given to the player after they complete the first notebook. It is a very useful item, as it can be used to buy an Energy Flavored Zesty Bar or a BSoda from the corresponding machines, or it can be given to a Pay Phone in the school that produces a tone that distracts Baldi.
WD-NoSquee: This particular item is found in the janitor's closet, where Gotta Sweep resides. A parody on the famous WD-40 spray, it can silence up to four door openings when used, giving the player extra insurance to get all the notebooks and exit the school, all without Baldi being able to track you. It is very useful when Baldi cannot find you, as he cannot track you from the doors alone.
Safety Scissors: This item can be found in a random classroom within the school. While it doesn't do much on it's own, it can be used to cut Playtime's jump rope when she forces you to play with her, or you can cut 1st Prize's wires to deter it. However, both of these actions risk the player getting detention for bullying.
Yellow Door Lock: This item can only be found in a specific faculty room. When used, it can lock any yellow door for about 10 seconds, preventing anything from getting through, especially Baldi, which is useful when the player has all seven notebooks, as that when Baldi is at his fastest, and Arts and Crafters is in his aggressive state.
Principal's Keys: This item can be found in one of the Faculty Rooms in the school. It is especially useful in detention, as the player can use the keys to escape detention. However, it is risky, as the Principal of the Thing may see you and put you back in detention, which gives you a high chance of being captured by Baldi.
BSoda: One of the most important items in the game, BSodas can be obtained from the BSoda Machine, or from the cafeteria. When used, the BSoda produces a blue spray that can push back all characters, with It's A Bully and Filename2 being exceptions. It is essential in the final stages of the game, as Baldi will be at his fastest speed yet.
Energy Flavored Zesty Bar: This item is obtained in the same way as BSoda, but differs in mechanic, as it refills the player's stamina bar, letting them outrun Baldi for a longer time.
Baldi Anti-Hearing and Disorienting Tape: This item can be found in one of the Faculty Rooms, and has only one use. When used on the tape player in the Principal's Office, it produces a tone that distracts Baldi until he shuts it off. It is very useful in the final stages of the game. as it can give the player more time to exit the school while Baldi is distracted.
Alarm Clock: This item can be found in one of the Faculty Rooms, and functions in a similar way to the Baldi Anti-Hearing and Disorienting Tape, only that it doesn't need a tape player to be operated. When placed, the clock produces a deep ticking noise, which won't affect Baldi until eventually ringing after 30 seconds, drawing Baldi to the sound, giving the player extra time to collect all the notebooks and exit the school.
Firewood: This item is only in the Field Trip demo, and is the main item of the game. The player must collect firewood and bring it back to the fire to refuel the fire, earning more points in the process, and deterring Baldi for a while. The item does carry a risk though, as collecting more firewood decreases your speed, making it harder to refuel the fire quickly if you are carrying a lot of sticks.
Big Ol' Boots: An item present in Birthday Bash, it can be found in the halls, classrooms, faculty rooms, or the newly-added Crazy Item Machine. When used, it can prevent 1st Prize from pushing the player, and can prevent Gotta Sweep slowing the player down when in the closet. This item wears off after fifteen seconds.
Teleportation Teleporter: This item, also added in Birthday Bash, can be found in the same places as the Big Ol' Boots. When used, it can teleport the player to a random location in the school.
Presents: These items, found in Birthday Bash, are strewn around the hallways and in classrooms. This contains a random item.
Mechanics[edit]
Doors: Doors are one of the primary mechanics of the game, and are found everywhere inside the school. All of them make noise, alerting Baldi to your position, unless you use WD-NoSquee on them. They have different looks depending on their type:
- Blue Doors: These are the most common doors found in the game. They are exactly what their name describes: a blue door with the number 99 on it. Almost all of them lead to classrooms, except for one that connects to the Janitor's Closet, and another that connects to the Principal's Office.
- Yellow Doors: Only found in the hallways of the school, they are double yellow doors. Two of them lead to the cafeteria, while four of them are used for the exits. The player can use the Yellow Door Lock on them to prevent anything from getting through.
- Faculty Doors: These doors have a wooden texture on them, and connect to Faculty Rooms. The player must be careful with these, as the Principal of the Thing can put you in detention if he sees you going through one of these
- Green Door: This door can only be seen in the secret ending, and has the words "Baldi's Office" on it. Opening it leads to Baldi's Office, with a glitched Baldi texture in the middle. If the player walks past it, they will be greeted with Filename2.
You Can Think Pad!TM: The You Can Think Pad!TM is an object only found in classrooms, when the player interacts with a notebook. It takes the appearance of a green tablet, with two screens on the right, the topmost one displaying questions, and the bottom-most one for answering. A smaller screen next to the answer space displays Baldi as he reads the problem, and will remain blank from the third notebook onward. There are three small boxes next to the topmost screen to say if the question was right or wrong, and there is an antenna on the top left, with a red ellipse on the top. In the upcoming mobile edition for this game, it has a number pad on the right side.
Inventory: The Inventory is one of the primary game mechanics, and the player uses it to store up to three items at a time. In the game, the Inventory can only be manipulated when It's a Bully takes one of the player's items. In the field trip demo, the Inventory is absent, as the main objective is to collect sticks. Similar to the main game, It's a Bully can take the player's sticks if he catches them while in hiding, but Arts and Crafters can also take the player's sticks away if he catches the player in the "NO" zone
Death Screens: These objects appear in the death screens:
- An eraser
- A fidget spinner
- A crank sharpener
- A pair of scissors
- A rare screen showing the number 99 with the bottom cut off to make it look like eyes. After a few seconds, the screen turns red, and a startling sound will play.
Endings[edit]
The game has two possible endings:
Normal ending: Can be achieved by escaping the school after collecting all seven notebooks. The game will end with a victory screen and a voice congratulating the player, and telling them to "do worse" (by failing all of the equations). The game crashes shortly after.
Secret ending: Can be achieved if the player escapes the school while failing all of the math equations in all of the notebooks. After exiting the school, the player will be teleported to the end of a hallway, where a poster will be found on the wall with Baldi congratulating the player, but also telling them that there is room for improvement. On the other side of the hallway there is a door labeled "Baldi's Office". After entering the room the player will find a glitched texture of Baldi, along with a character simply known as "Filename2" in the game's files. Filename2 informs the player that they must destroy the game and not tell anyone about it. The game then crashes after Filename2 finishes talking to the player.
