Characteristics
Balneology is the oldest branch of medical knowledge in Europe. It developed most rapidly in the 19th and 20th centuries. It has a rich tradition and vast empirical experience. Presently, balneology takes advantage of advancements in both traditional and contemporary medicine. It belongs to the group of disciplines of a complementary and interdisciplinary character. Balneological methods are non-invasive, and side effects are extremely rare. Moreover, balneology belongs to the holistic and integrative domains. Good therapeutic effects can be obtained in most chronic diseases, provided that patients are referred to balneological treatment with diseases susceptible to this therapy and in the stable period of the disease with preserved health reserves.[2]
