Bamakash (film)[edit]

Bamakash (ባማካሽ) is a 2016 Ethiopian epic adventure film directed by Henok Ayele and written by Getachew Tadele. Bamakash is a unique cinematic experience that features well known actors such as Henok Alemayhu, and established director Henok Ayele (ሄኖክ አየለ).[1] The story of Bamakash is described by the narrator of the film as a fable-like story, and a true story of fable.

According to writer and executive producer Getachew Tadele, the film is about “peace, unity and love” and more than 600 people are featured in and have worked on the film. When asked about the origins of the film production, Tadele has said, “I wrote it for the audience.” Director Henok Ayele describes the film as an adventure film that is one of a kind in Ethiopian film.

Plot[edit]

King Bamania’s right hand soldier and medicine man of the kingdom is on the run with his pregnant lover in an effort to escape the pursuit of those who would see them both killed. After outrunning their pursuers for nine months, the couple is now at the mercy of the imminently arriving child. In a final stand, the soldier stayed behind and fought off the kingdom's garrison while put his lover and the unborn child along with a scroll of knowledge aboard a small boat the soldier he pushed off the boat with two oars and enabled the escape of his lover and unborn child across the river to an unknown destination.

When the child grows up, the man that raised him, Lama of Mukash Village reveals to the boy the story of his birth and the reason why he is the only tall man in all of Mukash Village. Shortly after learning of his heritage, an un unexpected encounter takes him to the land of his parents, where he is charged with capital punishment. In a race to save him, a priest, a guard and a princess join the young man on an adventure that will put their commitment to truth and the resolve of their hearts in battle, love, and loss.

Bamakash meaning[edit]

Bamakash is a name born from the union of two peoples that were once foes—the people of Bamania and the people of Mukash Village. The union of former foes of “Bama” and “Kash” led to Bamakash.

Premiere and Release[edit]

Bamakash was first released in May 2016 and re-released in 2018 for a second debut in the Ethiopia cinemas.[2] The initial release in 2016 faced challenges in audience perceptions of the film. The film features new actors and actresses among well known actors such as Henok Alemayhu. Bamakash was newly released on November 21, 2018 in cinemas within and outside of Ethiopia. The initial priemere dates were November 21-23, 2018. The final release has a runtime of 91 minutes.
