Ban Krabueang Nok (Script error: The function "langx" does not exist.) is an archaeological site and village in Krabueang Nok subdistrict, Mueang Yang district, Nakhon Ratchasima province, northeastern Thailand.[1]:114 It lies on the western edge of the middle Mun region, just beyond the area taken to be covered by the Phimai ceramic tradition.[2]:226 The site is known for spouted pottery, which has been related both to the Dvaravati sites of central Thailand and to Óc Eo at the mouth of the Mekong.[2]:225–226
Excavation
The excavators treated some four metres of deposit as a single phase, although the stratigraphy distinguishes a lower part from an upper one.[2]:223 Two new pottery types, sherds with jar spouts, beads, glass fragments and other artefacts were recovered only from the upper part.[2]:223
Pottery
Spouted pots of the kind found here have been traced to an Indian form that spread into Southeast Asia.[1]:114 The Dvaravati implements of the middle Mun have been read as similar to or the same as those of the Chao Phraya basin.[1]:114 The pots from the site are short-necked, the body finished with a red mud wash or with vertical cord marking and the spout left plain and fairly short.[1]:114 The same form occurs at Mueang Fa Daet Song Yang in Kalasin province, at Ban Mueang Pueai in Roi Et province and at Oc Eo.[1]:114 That distribution has been read as possibly a local form shaped by local culture together with influence from communities as distant as Oc Eo.[1]:114
Excavations in the Phimai region produced no evidence of contact with Oc Eo, and similarities claimed for the middle Mun have been held to be beyond evaluation.[2]:226 Ban Krabueang Nok is the one site of the region for which a definite comparison with Oc Eo has been proposed, the short-necked spouted jars being related to Oc Eo rather than to Dvaravati sites.[2]:226 An earlier reading had connected the site's pottery closely with the Dvaravati sites of central Thailand, and that reading has been recorded as not superseded.[2]:225–226
