The shield ship (Bangpaeseon, (Hangul방패선; Hanja防牌船), which is also called (Bangseon, Hangul: 방선; Hanja: 防船), known as the "ship of the north," was a type of warship used during the late Joseon Dynasty in Korea. It was a smaller vessel than the panokseon and was used for coastal defense and river patrols, particularly in the northern regions of Korea.was a medium-sized warship armed with six cannons that carried 55 crewmen (mostly gunners) and protected them from enemy arrows and musket fire with a total of 31 pavisades of an appropriate height on both sides of the ship above the upper deck. It could operate near shallow west coasts where large ships have difficulty operating. In 1555, the ship launched into service, but it was not very important as it did not see action during the Imjin War and the Manchu Invasions until King Sukjong. The number of shields increased as time passed. In 1770, the number of shields was 97, more than 83 on large warships. [1]

History and Design[edit]

The Bangpaeseon was designed for speed and agility, making it ideal for navigating shallow waters and narrow rivers. It was powered by both oars and sails and was typically crewed by around 50 to 70 men. The ship was armed with several cannons and was also equipped with fire arrows and other weapons for close-range combat.

The Bangpaeseon was used to defend the northern border of Korea against incursions from the Manchu people and other neighboring groups. It played a crucial role in protecting Korea's northern frontier and was instrumental in maintaining the country's territorial integrity during a time of political upheaval and external threats.

The ship was especially effective in the northern regions of Korea, where the shallow waters and narrow rivers made it difficult for larger warships to navigate. The Bangpaeseon's speed and maneuverability allowed it to quickly respond to threats and engage in hit-and-run tactics against enemy vessels.

Legacy and Impact[edit]

The Bangpaeseon was an important example of the advanced shipbuilding technology and naval strategy of the Joseon Dynasty. It highlights the important role that ships played in the defense and security of Korea during this period. The ship's design and capabilities influenced the development of subsequent Korean warships, such as the Gwanggaeto the Great-class destroyers in the modern era.

The Bangpaeseon also played a cultural role in Korea, serving as a symbol of the country's military prowess and naval heritage. It has been featured in various Korean films and television dramas,
