Bank of Tennessee is a privately-owned financial institution based in Kingsport, Tennessee, United States. The bank has two sister divisions, Carter County Bank and Mountain Community Bank in North Carolina. The bank is wholly owned and controlled by a holding company, BancTenn Corp. It has 21 locations from Middle Tennessee to Western North Carolina.
The company’s main segments of operation are personal banking, lending, business banking and lending as well as wealth management in the communities it serves. As of 2021, the bank had $1.51 billion in assets and was ranked among the 50 largest banks in Nashville by deposits.[1]
History
In 1974, Bank of Tennessee was founded in Kingsport, Tennessee by William B. Greene, Jr. to service the rest of the Tri-Cities area outside of Elizabethton, Tennessee.[2] Prior to Bank of Tennessee, Carter County Bank was formed in Elizabethton, Tennessee in 1939 and purchased by William B. Greene, Jr. in 1964.[3] Over the next 30 years the two banks expanded and opened additional branches throughout the Tri-Cities. In 2004, Carter County Bank expanded into North Carolina with the addition of Mountain Community Bank located in Sugar Mountain, North Carolina. Carter County Bank and Bank of Tennessee merged in 2013 after Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) approval in 2012. Carter County Bank and Mountain Community Banks would retain their individual name and branding. The combined company would be based in Kingsport.
