The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship provides two years of funding for elite postdoctoral researchers in Canada or abroad. Awarded by the Government of Canada and its three main federal funding agencies (Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council (NSERC), and Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC)), the Banting Fellowship is a prestigious fellowship that aims to attract top-level researchers to Canada and retain talented Canadian scientists.[1]

Established in 2010 in honor of the Canadian Nobel laureate Frederick Banting, the Banting Fellowship makes 70 awards annually[2] that are split equally between the three granting agencies, with research topics in the following areas:

  • health research,
  • natural sciences and/or engineering,
  • social sciences and/or humanities

According to statistics provided by the Banting organization, approximately 600 applicants applied in 2017 for the 70 available fellowships[3]. Prior to submitting an application to the Banting organization, however, each applicant must pass an internal screen from his or her host institution (e.g. university or research institute), as institutions must first nominate applications from selected candidates to compete at the national level[4]

The salary provided by the Banting Fellowship ($70,000 CAD) significantly exceeds that offered for postdoctoral fellowships from other Canadian funding agencies. A postdoctoral fellowship awarded by CIHR, for example, provides $40,000 CAD per annum[5]. A list of previous Banting fellows can be found here
