Barayamal
Barayamal is Australia’s Indigenous Business Accelerator Program and a registered charity with the Australian Charities and Not-for-profits Commission[1]. The organisation was founded in April 2017 by Dean Foley[2], after successfully running the first Indigenous business accelerator program in Australia[3] to offer an alternative program to support Indigenous entrepreneurs, by Indigenous entrepreneurs.
Since April 2017, Barayamal also launched other programs and events focused on increasing Indigenous participation in entrepreneurship and technology, including the Indigiprenuer podcast[4], eMentoring, Give Backathon, First Nations Founders Meetup and the First Nations Youth Summit[5].
Barayamal’s mission is to inspire, educate and support Indigenous youth and budding entrepreneurs to achieve their dreams and create a better world for all who live in it.
The meaning of Barayamal
Barayamal means ‘Black Swan’ in Kamilaroi language[6]. Black swans were first seen by Europeans in 1697 during an expedition in Australia[7], but previously, they had only known of the white swan. For Barayamal, the black swan represents Indigenous entrepreneurs and it plans to show the world that Indigenous entrepreneurs exist and they can also build global businesses.
