Barbara Arnold (born May 21,1962) is a Vancouver based, mixed-media artist, whose abstract paintings explore the interplay between emotion and energy. Born and raised in The Hague in the Netherlands, Barbara immigrated to Canada in 1981 to study at the University of Victoria. The artist's polyglotism, of Dutch, French, Spanish and English.[1], enhanced her capacity for communication within abstract painting, developing a visual language as a touchstone for shared experiences. Documenting the complex internal spiritual journey, Arnold's work breaks from her contemporaries, as her paintings are prone to change upon further reflection, often altering completed works, as the artist wrestles with social and political issues.[2]Representing the artist, Gallery George in Vancouver describes her work as "challenging the notion of rapid consumption, encouraging the viewer to lose track of time..."[3] The spontaneously created pieces reveal a passion for colour and exploration, using methods that include acrylics, oils, wax, graphite, charcoal, antiquing processes and inks[4]
After travelling extensively throughout Europe, South, Central and North America, Africa and Asia, as well as working in the fields of, hospitality and travel industry and in interior design and photography and as a TV host, her search for a deeper spiritual meaning led her to a career in painting. In 2011, after attending courses at Emily Carr University of Art and Design, in Vancouver, B.C., Arnold received private training under well-known artists and instructors, such as Jeanne Krabbendam. Impressed with Arnold's work, Krabbendam invited Arnold into her curated exhibition at the Britannia Mine Museum, "Above and Below the Surface". Describing Arnold within the exhibition as one of the "... great emerging artists who are making art pieces in an innovative and experimental style."[5]When Arnold's art studio was located on the arts and culture hub of Granville Island her studio was recommended in Inside Vancouver's "Art, Eat and Sip on Granville Island" presented by Vancouver Foodster, listing "some of the best insider spots on Granville Island" [6]. The 1656 Duranleau Street studio space[7] was neighbours with the notable publication house, Granville Island Publishing Ltd, who published Arnold's work in 2017, "Latitude and Longitude: Abstract Art Inspired by My Travels". Each piece in the publication is named after places that she travelled and reflects how they have fuelled her creativity and shaped her view of the world[8]. In the forward, the publisher Jo Blackmore, describes Arnold as "an abstract artist who specializes in exploring the connection between emotion, energy and place though a unique technique that intentionally creates rust on wooden panels."[8]
Arnold's bold acrylic paintings and mixed-media artworks were featured in many group and solo exhibitions. Select exhibitions of note include her 2012 solo exhibition at Studio 13 Fine Art on Railspur Alley, entitled, "Earth"[9] and the group exhibition, "Discovery: Juried Exhibition for New and Emerging Artists," the following year. This annual exhibition provides exposure to emerging artists, juried by professional artist Michael Abraham, Seymour Art Gallery’s curator Sarah Cavanaugh, and artist Liane McLaren Varnam, who selected 26 artworks for the exhibition in 2013.[10]
Interviewed multiple times on her artwork, Arnold spoke directly to the Dutch community about her methodologies with Harma Volders on Connect FM Canada[11] In English, Arnold interviewed with Mass Adebi of ABCO Film Corporation on Tulip TV, the Dutch television network in Vancouver, and again on the podcast, "Fascinating Women,"[12] hosted by Inner Spirit Photography.
In May 2022, Arnold organized a silent auction for the Dutch community to raise funds for the Ukraine. Through silent auction of her own artwork and contributions from local businesses, Arnold raised $6,000 for the charity.
The artist's work was featured in the Television and Movie industry in two Netflix series, Riverdale and Power.
