History[edit]

Barbizon was originally founded in 1939 by Helen Fraser with the first "charm school" on Fifth Avenue in New York, New York[2]. Fraser was well poised in the world of modeling and manners. She wrote Assignment in Modeling: A Guide to a Career in Fashion and Photographic Modeling[3].

Barbizon Chique a independently owned and operated franchise of Barbizon Modeling and Acting School (known as Barbizon International), opened in the 1979 in Wilmington, Delaware and has had many local talent soar into stardom, Ryan Phillippe, Melody Woodin, and Christina Makowski. Over the last few years Barbizon International started buying out it's franchisees and absorbing them into the Barbizon USA brand. Barbizon Chique is the last remaining Barbizon franchise to still have it's own brand identity and not be reabsorbed by corporate.

Barbizon Chique is a family affair run by the mother-daughter duo Joan Bernard[4][5] and Susan Liebesman[6][7]. Joan has been in the modeling and entertainment industry for many years and spends her time as a choreographer, commentator for fashion shows, lecturer, pageant judge, as well as teaching special classes like etiquette at Barbizon. Susan on the other hand, has been at Barbizon since a young girl, in 1989 she was crowned Miss TEEN Delaware[8]. Today, she produces fashion shows, photographs models, manages talent, coaches pageants, and more. They both serve on various board throughout the area; from the Advisory Council in the Fashion & Apparel Studies department at the University of Delaware[9] to the Fashion Group International in Philadelphia[10] and various others in between.
