[1]{{subst:AfC submission/Barkat Hussain Shaheen is a research scholar working on the literary, intellectual and religious traditions among the Gujjar Bakerwal tribe of Jammu and Kashmir. Because of his long field research, he has observed the tribe from very closed lenses and his mastery over Gojri and other vernacular languages helps him to understand the inner world of Gujjar-Bakerwals.He himself belong to the same tribe and migrated with his family in his early childhood to the higher reaches for pastures as a part of long tradition.

The practical knowledge about the tribe from the ground realities and theoretical knowledge from social sciences are the reason for his uniqueness in studying the tribe. He got influenced by Bhangya Bhukya a historian primarily works on the tribes of Deccan when he was doing his Master's degree in History from University of Hyderabad. He has written several articles on the Gujjar-Bakerwal tribe where he touches the issues like marginalization, migration, values and Gojri literature.
