Barkleys are a brand of mints and candies packed in metal tins. Barkleys products are sold in more than 50 countries worldwide. The mints are small round tablets with mint and other flavors. Barkleys Mints are described as strong and intense in flavor, which is also their slogan. Barkleys mints are typically sold in tins containing 50g, although the Mini Mint and Liquorice range is sold in smaller tins with net weights varying from 15 to 20g. The slogan of Barkleys is "Tastefully Intense". Most versions of Barkleys Mints are vegan, this is indicated on each tin with a vegan logo.

History[1] Barkleys Mints were first launched in the second half of the previous century in Washington – USA by Tuttle & Co. The first range to be introduced was the Classic Mint line, starting with 3 flavors; Peppermint, Cinnamon and Wintergreen. Although sales in the US market were rather limited, international sales were gradually rising. In 2009, Tuttle & Co. and Barkleys mints were acquired by Trompenburg Candy, based in The Netherlands. As of that year, Barkleys started expanding their product lines. Barkleys has expanded their product range to over 20 products, with each flavor following the concept of the original 3 flavors.

New products were launched over a period of 14 years, which resulted in 19 new flavors. 4 of these new flavors being ginger, liquorice, aniseed and spearmint. In 2013, Barkleys introduced the Mini Mints range, a mini sugar-free version of the cinnamon and peppermint flavor. Other new product lines were the Bio Organic Line and the Chocolate line.

At the end of 2016, Barkleys Liquorice Pellets were introduced, consisting of 4 variants. In 2018, Barkleys developed the Gourmet Mint range. The gourmet range follows the concept of a spice combined with a fruit flavor.[2]

Marketing

Barkleys products are sold in more than 50 countries worldwide in all sorts of distribution channels, such as supermarkets, drug stores, pharmacies, coffee shops, petrol stations, sundry shops, candy shops, etc. Barkleys says that it uses high quality ingredients exclusively, which is also why they put their product in a strong tin. Barkleys products are popular among young consumers, they are attracted by the stylish retro design and the more extreme approach to flavoring.

As mentioned, the slogan of Barkleys is "Tastefully Intense". Also, “The Mint with a Punch” and "Really Intense" are used as a pay-off. Advertising and promotion of the Barkleys brand is done primarily via online channels and social media such as Instagram and Facebook.[3]

Product lines

The Barkley range consists of the following product lines:

o Classic Mints The Classic Mints line is the first and central product line of Barkleys. The classic line is packed in a Barkleys tin with a silver trim. The Barkleys classic line has been expanded over the course of the years and now includes the following flavors; Peppermint, Spearmint, Wintergreen, Cinnamon, Liquorice, Ginger and Aniseed.

o Bio Organic Mints Barkleys Bio Organic mints are the organic variants of the Barkleys range. It solely uses organic ingredients. Barkleys Bio Organic mints are available in three flavors: Cinnamon, Ginger and Peppermint.

o Chocolate Mints Barkleys Chocolate mints is the product line centered around chocolate. These mints are coated dragees filled with dark chocolate. There are two flavors in this line, namely: Chocolate mint and Chocolate cinnamon. The coating of these products are flavored with peppermint and cinnamon respectively. The chocolate line is designed differently compared to other Barkleys tins. These tins follow a brown theme with a gold trim.

o Gourmet Mints The Gourmet Mints line is one of the latest concepts. The flavor of these products are created by combining a spice with a fruit. These Gourmet products are currently available in the following flavors: “Cinnamon & Apple”, “Ginger & Orange” and “Pepper & Peach”. The design of this line is slightly different, namely in a bronze trim.

o Liquorice Pellets Liquorice Pellets is a line of small liquorice candies. It is available in 4 flavors: Pure, Menthol, Mint Coated and Salmiak. It is also one of two lines that greatly differ from the other lines, mostly because of the size of the tin. These tins are about 3 times smaller and are designed in a black trim.

o Mini Mints The Mini Mints range are the mini variant of the Classic Barkleys line. They are available in three flavors: Cinnamon, Peppermint and Eucalyptus. The Mini Mints range is sugar free. The mini mints are 3 times smaller than the regular Barkleys tin.

Tins

Barkleys has a distinctive tin with many different designs. They are made of steel and follow a specific theme, such as: Brushed steel, silver, gold, bronze or black.

Barkleys tins can be reused when they are empty. People are very creative in this field and often reuse empty tins for purposes such as sowing or storage kits[4], but are also converting these tins into bluetooth speakers or mp3 players.
